Mary Elizabeth Chase, age-75, passed away October 19, 2022 at the Exeter Hospital, Exeter, NH. She was born December 11, 1946 in Portsmouth, NH, daughter of the late Karl A. Whitney Sr. and Marjorie (Staples) Dow.


Mary grew up in Portsmouth, NH and was one of seven children in her family. She graduated from Portsmouth High School, Class of 1966. In her younger years, Mary worked making hot dogs and sausages for Schultz in Portsmouth and worked in the kitchen at the Rockingham Hotel in Portsmouth. Mary also worked in Somersworth, NH at a shoe factory and was a devoted homemaker for her children and grandchildren. She lived the majority of her life in Portsmouth and Rochester, NH. Mary was a very active member of the Salvation Army and spent many years ringing those bells for donations especially at Christmas time. She also volunteered her time at soup kitchens. Mary enjoyed cooking and she would always handle the Christmas and Thanksgiving feast for the family. Holidays were always important to Mary and she was known to keep up her Christmas tree all year long. Her whoopie pies were the favorite of many in her family. Mary helped raise her granddaughter and would often take her to the Rochester Public Library helping out with summer activities and programs.


She is survived by her daughter, Donalee Skates and her husband Patrick, daughter, Dolores Davis, daughter, Carol Tavares, son, Dennis Meeks, son, Alan Meeks, step-daughters, Susan Meeks, Deborah Church, 11 grandchildren, Alicia, Kevin, Meghan, Athena, Anjelicca, Tyler, Kyle, Emma, Xavier, Razlyn, Cecelia, 6 great-grandchildren, Tyler, Isabella, Peyton, Shelby-Rei, Kiara, Maya, step-grandchildren, Kristen, Michelle, David, step-great-grandchildren, Jameson, Olivia, brother, Dennis Whitney, sister, Janice Beaulieu, sister, Dolores Chambers, brother, Peter Dow, brother, Don Dow, and generations of nieces and nephews.


In addition to her parents, Mary was predeceased by her brother, Karl Whitney Jr.


There are no calling hours.


A celebration of her life will be held on Wednesday, October 26, 2022 at 11:00 AM at the Salvation Army, 10 Olde Farm Ln., Rochester, NH 03867.


Private burial for the family will be held in Brooks Cemetery, Eliot, ME.


In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Salvation Army, 10 Olde Farm Ln., Rochester, NH 03867.
