Leila Harring (née Philipps), 73, passed away on October 13, 2022, in Seattle, Washington.

Leila was the eldest daughter of Gene and Naida Philipps of Wallace, Michigan. She graduated from Northern Michigan University with a teaching degree and taught in Marinette, Wisconsin at Park School and later in Rolling Meadows, Illinois at Kimball Hill Elementary. Leila was a devoted mother who showed her love through seemingly endless generosity with her time and energy. She went on to obtain a master’s degree in Library Science and became school librarian at the Dwight D. Eisenhower Junior High School in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, a role which brought her true joy. In retirement she took particular pride in giving back through delivering Meals on Wheels, and in her adventures to craft fairs and regional tourist destinations with her lady friends from school.

Leila was generous of heart and had a quick wit. As the eldest sibling she was both a role model, friend, and caretaker of her younger siblings. She was a voracious reader of non-fiction and particularly enjoyed autobiographies through which she developed fascinations with unexpected topics like fly fishing. Leila was an avid sports fan, lifelong Packer fan, and counted Hank Aaron among her heroes. She enjoyed nature documentaries and did beautiful needlepoint, usually as a gift for family.

Leila was preceded in death by her parents Gene and Naida Philipps. She is survived by her son Nicholas (Zoë) Harring and four siblings, Randall Philipps, Kathy Philipps (Larry Wenger), Melissa Pichette, and Peggy Philipps (Dan Koller).

A memorial service will be held at Anderson Diehm Funeral Home in Stephenson, Michigan on October 30, 2022, beginning at 1:00pm until 2:30pm.

Burial will be at the Mellen Township Cemetery.
