Ellen was born in Rosetown, to Edgar and Edith Saunderson on August 26, 1940. When she was about 2 years old the family moved to Ontario where brother George was born in 1943 making Ellen a proud big sister. They returned to Saskatchewan the summer of 1946 and little sister Joyce was born that December.

Ellen received all her education in Saskatoon. Starting with Mayfair School and then Bedford Road Collegiate where she graduated in 1958. She went to Normal School for one year and started teaching.
