Joshua J. Ciocco Obituary

Josh Ciocco passed away suddenly on October 3rd, 2022, at the age of 38. He was born November 15th, 1983, in Voorhees, NJ and lived in Atco, NJ until the start of his career. He attended Edgewood High School in Winslow, NJ and Berkshire Academy in Sheffield, MA. After high school, he played Junior Hockey in Western Canada. His Post- Secondary Education included receiving a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science at University of New Hampshire and Master’s degree in Finance at University of New Hampshire. He played 4 years for the NCAA Division I Men’s Hockey Team at the University of New Hampshire where he served as Captain in his senior year.

He then continued his hockey endeavors by playing professional ice hockey for the Wheeling Nailers (West Virginia) and the Fresno Falcons (California) of the ECHL. From there, he launched various avenues of his career including being a Commentator for New England Sports Network (NESN), a contributor to United States Hockey Report (USHR), and scouting for Pulver Sports. He started his coaching career at Milton Academy (Milton, MA), where he was promoted to the NCAA ranks in Anchorage, AK in 2013. He resided there until 2016 when he was hired as an assistant coach at Brown University (Rhode Island). After spending 2 years at Brown University, he was then hired as an Assistant Hockey Coach at Merrimack College in 2018 and had maintained that position ever since.

His main hobby was the sport of hockey in all facets: playing, teaching, writing, coaching, scouting, and observing. He enjoyed playing golf, was an avid outdoorsman such as hiking, fishing, jet-skiing out on the Mullica River with his beloved father and confidant, Jody, and never turned down a pickup basketball game. He was an accomplished runner who ran the Boston Marathon on April 15, 2013. Josh was an avid movie buff interested in various genres and cinematic styles. He was a world traveler, visiting places such as China, Italy, Thailand, Germany to name a few. He immersed himself in the history and cultures of other societies. He also loved his Philly home teams such as the Philadelphia Eagles, Philadelphia 76ers, Philadelphia Phillies, and Philadelphia Flyers.

Josh was caring, intelligent, witty, wicked sense of humor, hard-working, competitive, dependable, committed, and loyal. He was a team leader, and he was very devoted to his family and friends.

As much as he liked traveling around the world, he always looked forward to coming back home to Atco, NJ to spend time with his family. His family were his biggest supporters and fans and were incredibly proud of all his accomplishments. The New England area was also a cherished, second home to him. This was especially apparent throughout his coaching and recruiting career with his student athletes, where he was committed to their overall success on and off the ice.

Josh is survived by his mother, Susan Jenkins, his father, Jody Ciocco (Lianne), his Brothers Joe (Kelly), Julian, and Jordan (Alexandria). He was a loving Uncle to his niece, Madison Ciocco. There is a huge hole left in their hearts, but they appreciate the life he lived and the cherished memories that were shared. A loss is also felt by the entire Hockey Community, who loved and embraced Josh throughout most of his life.

A visitation with the family will be held on Wednesday, October 12, 2022, from 5:00pm to 7:00pm at the LeRoy P. Wooster Funeral Home & Crematory, 441 White Horse Pike, Atco, NJ 08004.
