Michael Anthony Brothers Obituary

Michael ‘Mike’ Brothers

December 5th, 1939 – September 30th, 2022

It is with great sadness that the family of the late Michael ‘Mike’ Brothers announces his passing at the age of 82.

Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories, his wife, Madeline Walsh; his children, Lisa (Steve), Michael (Patti), Aaron (Kim); grandchildren, Lauren (Rick), Brett, Olivia, Ally, Melanie, Leo; siblings, John (Barb), Madonna (Jim), Patricia (Jim), Bernadette (Dave), and Joan. Mike will also be greatly missed by a wide circle of much-loved in-laws, extended family, and friends.

Mike felt blessed to have gained additional family when he married Madeline. Also leaving to mourn is Madeline’s daughter Alicia; her children Treyvon, Brooklyn, and Aaliyah; and Madeline’s siblings and their families. Mike was predeceased by his parents, Dennis, and Annie; his first wife and love, Connie; and his siblings, Mary, Liz, Leo, Dennis, and Tony.

Mike was born into a large, well-respected family in the town of Bishop’s Falls. In his youth, he enjoyed playing hockey and he went on to play with the Corner Brook Royals, becoming a Herder Memorial Champion in 1962. Although he hung up his skates after having children, in the years to come he would often be found in the stands of many arenas, watching his children, and later his grandchildren play the sport that was so close to his heart.

After completing grade 11, Mike left home at age 15 for Corner Brook where he worked at Coleman’s grocery store in order to send money home to support his family in Bishop’s Falls. He would later become a messenger boy in the mill, then called Bowaters, which would eventually morph into a career as a journeyman industrial electrician. He met and married Connie Martyn in 1964 and had three children

Over the next 44 years he supported his family while continuing his work as an electrician. Eventually he tried his hand at other career opportunities, including a stint as the Premier’s Executive Assistant, the Personnel Director with the City of Corner Brook, and the Industrial Relations Superintendent at Abitibi mill in Stephenville where he worked up until his retirement.

After Connie’s passing in 2009, Mike met Madeline. He returned to his birthplace, Bishops Falls and they married in 2014. The two enjoyed going for drives, dancing, and travelling together, especially to visit with their families. His family, in return, adored quality time spent with ‘Poppy’. Mike was incredibly excited to be welcoming his first great-grandchild to the world, due October 12th.

Donations in Mikes memory may be made to Palliative Care at Dr. Hugh Twomey Health Center.

While our hearts break knowing that he is no longer on this earth, it brings everyone great comfort to know that a beautiful angel watches over us. We miss you, always. Love you more.
