Evelyn Smith Obituary

Schuyler, NY-Evelyn (Irvin) Smith, 86, passed away, Friday, September 23, 2022, at her home, with her loving family at her side.

Born in Staunton, VA, February 16, 1936, she was a daughter of the late Edward Waller and Ruth Marie (Jones) Irvin. Raised and educated in Waynesboro, VA, she graduated from Waynesboro High School, at the age of sixteen, in 1952. She also attended Clifton Forge CNO Hospital School of Nursing.

On November 22, 1958, in Waynesboro, VA, she married Jacob Harold Smith. Mr. Smith passed away on May 22, 2014, after over fifty-five years of marriage. She began her work career with Crompton-Shenandoah Plant, in Waynesboro, VA. She later held positions with the General Electric Company, Wenonah Elementary School, and Smith’s Transfer. Mrs. Smith retired from Best Buy in Verona, VA, after over six years of loyal service. She was an active member of Basic United Methodist Church, in Waynesboro. Shortly after her husband Harold’s (Smitty’s) passing, Evelyn relocated to the Utica area to be with her daughter and her family.

Evelyn, also known as “Granny” to many, had a deep love for her Savior Jesus Christ and spent much of her time involved in church groups and activities. She dearly loved spending time with all of her family. She took many trips out of state to visit her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She enjoyed traveling with friends on regular shopping trips to Hamrick’s in South Carolina. Evelyn loved all types of music and was a long-time member of the choir at Basic United Methodist Church. She often cooked large meals and opened her home to family for special occasions and holidays. She was regularly seen at yard sales on Saturday mornings finding treasures for her loved ones. She never passed up purchasing a church or school cookbook and would spend her free time reading through them. Everyone who was close to her will always cherish her deviled egg and banana bread recipes.
