Obituary

Gerald “Jerry” Eugene Morton, 81, of Austin, Texas, passed away in his home September 21, 2022.  He was born May 29, 1941 in Elk City, Oklahoma, to Orvil William and Doris Mildred Morton.

After growing up in rural western Oklahoma, Jerry received a degree in Economics from Southwestern Oklahoma State University in 1963. He married Sondra Miller on August 5, 1967.  He worked for the State of Oklahoma, recruited businesses to relocate to western Oklahoma, started and sold various businesses over time, and finished his career trading commodities.  He proudly served in the United States Army as a Drill Instructor during the 1960's.

He was preceded in death by his parents.  He is survived by his wife, Sondra Kay Morton, daughter, Krista Kay Wise, son, Eric Nicholas Morton, son-in-law David Christian Wise, and his daughter-in-law Nicole Noel Morton.  Jerry has five grandsons, Tave Christian Wise, Chapman David Wise, Tucker William Wise, Decker James Morton, and Cade Nicholas Morton.  He is also survived by his brother, Terry Morton, and wife, Diane Morton, nephews, Jeff Morton (Mindy) and Jason Morton (Maureen), niece, Jana Harris (Justin) and their children.

Known as Papa Moose, Grandad, and Papa, he loved spending time with his grandsons.  He was always in the stands cheering them on with whatever they chose to participate in.  On Jerry’s 80th birthday, the family presented him with a gift highlighting character traits that were evident in his life.  The words used to describe him were thoughtful, confident, steadfast, devoted, sacrifice, legacy, strategic, caring, creative, kind, and family.

He loved all things related to flying and was an avid Sooner fan.  He loved to travel, especially a good road trip. He wanted to visit all 50 states and almost made it. Jerry enjoyed trading commodities and spent hours working to develop his own trading algorithms.  Economics was his passion and he loved the challenge of trying to figure out how to be proactive with market swings.

Jerry testified to anyone that would listen about the miracle that God worked in his life - healing cancer found in his leg in 1993.  John 14:14 was his favorite, “If you ask me anything in My name, I will do it.”  He trusted Jesus with his life, and is now in his forever home.

A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. at Red Hill Cemetery in Hammon, Oklahoma on Monday, September 26, 2022.  Graveside services have been entrusted to the care of Richard and Tammy Dugger and the staff of Martin-Dugger Funeral Home in Elk City, Oklahoma.

Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 28, 2022 at The Lakeway Church in the Garden, 2203 Lakeway Blvd, Lakeway, Texas, followed by a luncheon at the Morton Home.
