ELIZABETH "LIZZY" MARY CASKEN Honolulu, Hawaii Obituary

ELIZABETH "LIZZY" MARY CASKEN

Our ray of sunshine, Elizabeth “Lizzy” Mary Casken, age 31, beloved daughter of John and Sarah Casken, died on September 2, 2022, at Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, following the unexpected and devasting effects of a cerebral blood clot. Prior to her passing, her four brothers flew in from the mainland to be with her, remind her of how much she was loved by her family and the broader community, and to say their final farewells.

With the support and love of her family and various people and organizations, Elizabeth had overcome developmental disabilities, speech deficits, and mental health challenges to become an integral part of the community. She was proud to be a union employee at Aikahi Safeway, where she valued her job, her co-workers, and the many shoppers she greeted with her infectious smile and her brilliant blue eyes. She loved to spend her earnings, walking to the local eateries in Kailua, where everyone knew her by name. She cared about people, kept up with what was going on in their lives, and was always up for an adventure, whether it was to get a shave ice in Kailua or travel to Europe. Her excitement for life knew no bounds.

Elizabeth was a registered organ donor and, as such, through Legacy of Life, her organs were donated to three recipients in Hawaii, including the father of a dear friend of hers, who is home and doing well after years of dialysis.

In addition to her parents, Elizabeth is survived by her brothers Philip (Sophie), Paul, Damien (Silke), and James, and two nephews, Remy and Beau. She is also survived by her uncles Roger (Melissa Walt) Thompson, Patrick (Rosie) Casken, and Michael Casken, as well as her aunt, Patty Thompson.

Elizabeth was preceded in death by her grandparents, Nancy and Lloyd Thompson, and Cliff and Chris Casken, as well as her uncles, Robert Thompson and Bernard Casken. Elizabeth also leaves behind her many circles of friends and her Safeway family.

A gathering to honor and remember Elizabeth was held Friday, September 9, 2022, attended by several hundred family and friends. There was a paddle-out and scattering of ashes, timed with the setting of the sun and the rising of the full moon. It was a fitting farewell.

Charitable donations in memory of Elizabeth may be made to Special Olympics, designating the Kamali‘i Koa and the Mighty Ducks teams, with whom she competed in bowling, swimming, and track. The mailing address is 91-610 Maunakapu St, Ewa Beach, HI 96706. Donations may also be made to the Safeway Foundation Hawaii Scholarship Fund, in memory of Elizabeth. The address is c/o Hawaii Community Foundation, 827 Fort Street Mall, Honolulu, HI 96813. Cards may be sent to 84 White Sands Place, Kailua, HI 96734.

Aloha,

Sending warm thoughts to the Casken family. I didn't know Lizzy officially but I've been an Aikahi Safeway customer for over 20 years. During the years that Lizzy worked at Aikahi Safeway, I saw her frequently. It was clear how much Lizzy loved her work (she help...

Oh Sarah and John, Our deepest condolences for the loss of your beautiful daughter. Her joy was contagious, all through the pandemic when Safeway was the highlight of our day. Her short life made a big difference to those she met. With love, Walter and Hazel Beh
