Obituary
Jean Northrup, 99, died on September 17, 2022, in Springfield.
Jean was born on March 16, 1923, in Bloomington, IL and moved to Springfield in 1937. She attended Springfield High School, Stephens College in Missouri and received both a bachelor’s degree in Oboe Performance in 1955 and a Master of Music degree in 1957 from the New England Conservatory (NEC) in Boston. Jean was principal oboist with the Springfield (Massachusetts) Symphony, the Rhode Island Philharmonic, and the Goldovsky Opera Company. Additionally, Jean did considerable work in oratorio and chamber music throughout New England, including the Tanglewood Music Center. She also served on the NEC faculty teaching oboe, music theory and composition before moving back to the Midwest to hold Music Department teaching positions at Rochester, IL High School, Northern Illinois University and the University of Wisconsin. As Professor in the School of Music at Millikin University, she taught double reeds, music literature and theory from 1966-1986
Jean retired in 1986 and spent the rest of her life traveling with friends, camping, hiking, cross-country skiing, reading and playing her oboe, bassoon and recorder with several musical ensembles in and around Springfield. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents, John and Helen Northrup, and one brother, Charles.
She is survived by two nephews and three nieces, Mark (wife, Theresa) of Seattle, Charles (wife, Dianne McNamee) of Springfield, Melinda Knarr (husband, Lindsay) of Chambersburg, PA, Judith (husband, Joseph Virgilio) of Western Springs, IL, and Susan Scott (husband, Don) of Sharpsburg, GA. Also surviving are her seven grand nephews and nieces and four great- grand nephews and nieces.
Memorial Gathering: Family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Friday, November 11, 2022, at Boardman-Smith Funeral Home, 800 South Grand Avenue West, Springfield, IL.
Private burial will be held at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
To commemorate her lifelong love of animals, memorials may be sent to the Animal Protective League of Springfield, 1001 Taintor Road, Springfield, IL 62702.
