Lotte Tuozzolo Obituary

Lotte Tuozzolo, 89, of Brewster, Massachusetts, passed away on August 25, 2022, with her children and loving dog Justin by her side.

Lotte was born in Switzerland in 1932 to Oskar and Hulda V. and was the second of seven children. She came to Cambridge, MA in 1956 as an au pair and quickly fell in love with America. One year later, she moved to New York City and worked as a window designer at Bonwit Teller and Tiffany’s. Soon after, she met her future husband Peter, and they married in 1958.

Between 1962-1994, the inseparable couple found purpose and pleasure in boarding school life; Lotte’s artistic and creative hand was always put to good use. They worked and lived at Lakemont Academy (NY) and Wilbraham & Monson Academy (MA) and moved to The Taft School (CT) in 1975 with their three children: Barbara, Linda, and Nicholas. While at Taft, Lotte worked as a librarian and took every opportunity to make seasonal window displays until her retirement. For the School’s centennial, Lotte also made a commemorative quilt that remains framed and on display along the School’s main corridor.

In addition to her family and friends, Lotte had many things that brought her great joy: entertaining, baking, arranging flowers, hiking in the Alps, classical music, gardening, painting, and a good cup of tea in the afternoon. Her Swiss-German accent never fully left her lips, and she humbly endured ceaseless teasing by her children for her mispronunciations.

Upon their retirement in 1994, Lotte and Peter moved to Cape Cod and spent many blissful years together. Lotte loved nothing more than caring for her grandchildren and spending time with friends-hosting a large celebration every August 1st in recognition of Switzerland’s independence.

Lotte is survived by her three children, five grandchildren-Claire, Ava, Nicholas, Maya, and Hadley, four siblings, Gerda, Maya, Richard, and Urs, and many nieces and nephews.

There will be a memorial service to celebrate Lotte’s life on Saturday, October 29, at 1 pm at the First Congregational Church of Chatham; 650 Main Street, Chatham, MA.
