Marion Smith

Marion "Woody" Smith, 87, of Little York, Indiana passed away on August 20, 2022, at home with his family by his side. He was born June 7, 1935, near Spurgeon Lake in the Delaney bottoms of Washington County, Indiana to Issac and Julia Mae (Hyde) Smith, who preceded him in death. He spent most of his working career operating heavy equipment. In the early days, he worked for Mitchell and Stark and worked several years at Marble Hill. He was a life member of the Local 181 International Union of Operating Engineers from 1962 until he retired in 1994. He also owned his own equipment and did countless side jobs for many people. Woody loved fast cars. He competed on a few local tracks. Most of his racing days were spent in a Late Model on the dirt of the Brownstown Speedway in the early and mid-70s before selling his #25 car to Paul Crockett. He loved telling stories about the old days and hiking the Knobstone Trail and many old buggy, jeep, and logging trails off the Old Mail Route. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Loreena "Reenie" (Marion), 2 daughters, Janice L. Fleenor (Tommy), and Lisa F. Smith, 3 grandchildren, Christina Marie Smith (Jason), Sterling Kent Backus, and Dalton Ray Fleenor, and 1 great-grandchild, Micaela Marion Smith, 3 brothers, Alvin "Henry" Smith (Alice), Issac "Snookie" Smith (Judy), and Elmer Smith (Genie). He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Robert "Chune" Smith, and a sister, Freeda "Sissy" Barnard. A Family Submitted Obituary Memorial donations in honor of Woody may be given to the Alzheimer's Association c/o Adams Family Funeral Homes & Crematory 138 Westavia Boulevard, Scottsburg, IN 47170. Cremation services have been entrusted to Adams Family Funeral Homes & Crematory Scottsburg.
