John Marquis Ballantyne November 20, 1929 - August 26, 2022
John was the son of Ronald and Lee Ballantyne of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. John graduated from Cranbrook Schools.
He joined the United States Army and served on the front line of the Korean War. He was honored with the Silver Star for gallantry in action as a Sergeant Artillery, United States Army:
“During an extensive offensive action against a strategic, enemy-held hill, Sergeant Ballantyne assumed command of the forward observer party when the officer in command was seriously wounded.On two separate allied assaults, Sergeant Ballantyne, with complete disregard for his personal safety, remained in his exposed position, accurately directing artillery support fire on enemy positions until he was relieved.” General Orders Number 545
John was also awarded the primary military decoration by the South Korean government. It is awarded to a person who rendered "outstanding military services by participating in an action in time of war or in quasi-state of war or by performing his/her duty equivalent to combat, such as responding to the attack of an enemy in a contact area." 4th Class (Hwarang)
After returning from combat duty, John completed his Business Degree, in Finance, from Wayne State University. John had an illustrious career at CR Industries until his retirement in 1993.
John is survived by his wife, Barbara of 62 years, a son, Ron (Nancy), a son, John (Lynn) a daughter, Mary (Steve) Gwizdala, a sister, Kay Polansky, grandchildren Christopher, Casey, Danielle, Zach, Kellie, Katy and David.
John's greatest love was his wife and family. He always brought sunshine to a room, he was humble, gracious, kind and a true fighter for his family. John exuded love, this was exemplified by John attending each and every sports event for all three of his children no matter how busy he was.
John left the world better than he found it.
A private military ceremony will be held.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Wounded Warriors or The Leelanau Conservancy.
