Susie Brown Shimek, 65, of Alexandria, Virginia, passed away on August 2nd, 2022, in Leesburg, Virginia. Susie Brown Shimek was born in Clarksville, Tennessee to Amy Jo Brown Sprinkle and Billy Gene Brown Sr. on August 12th, 1956. She attended Clarksville High School, Vanderbilt University, and Austin Peay State University. She began her career in the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation’s Division of Air Pollution Control. Later Susie had a 27-year career with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). During her distinguished tenure at the EPA, Susie worked tirelessly as a nationally recognized expert to reduce lung cancer deaths from radon. Most recently, she was promoted to a supervisory position and led national programs aimed at helping children with asthma by controlling indoor asthma triggers, and improving indoor air quality in the nation’s schools.

Susie Brown Shimek is preceded in death by her mother Amy Jo Brown Sprinkle, her father Billy Gene Brown Sr., and her mother-in-law Jean Shimek Monahan.

Susie Brown Shimek is survived by her son Jacob Shimek, her brothers Billy Gene Brown Jr., Kirk and Todd Sprinkle, her sisters Vicki Brown Hughes and Linda Brown Murphy Scott, her other mother Elaine Hawkins, her father Larry Sprinkle, Rosie Sprinkle, Adam, Brian, and Aidan Hughes, Kala, Parker Jo, and Seth Murphy, Alex Scott, Dustin, Joe, and Paul Shelby, Laura Snodgrass Pohlenz, Tracy Washington Enger, and Gail Williams.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. ET on Saturday, August 27, 2022, at 3601 Russell Rd, Alexandria, VA 22305 with the Rev. Dr. Anne Turner of Grace Episcopal Church, officiating. Immediately following funeral services, a celebration of life will commence where friends, family, and loved ones will be invited to gather, share stories, and reminisce. A second ceremony will be held in Clarksville, Tennessee, at a later date, to ensure all loved ones have the opportunity to gather in celebration of Susie’s life.
