Clarine Kooima

Mrs. Clarine Kooima, age 89, of Hull, was called to glory on Wednesday, August 17, 2022, at the Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, South Dakota. A visitation with the family present will be held on Saturday, August 20, from 2:00pm to 4:00pm, at the Hull Protestant Reformed Church in Hull. There will be a funeral service on Monday, August 22, at 10:30am, at the church with the Rev. James Laning officiating. Interment will follow the service at the Hope Cemetery in Hull. The Oolman Funeral Home in Hull is in charge of arrangements. Clarine was born to Nick W. and Minnie (Brummel) Kooiker on October 9, 1932, on her parents’ farm three miles south of Boyden. She grew up on the farm and attended the Capel Township #1 Country School through the eighth grade. After graduating from Western Christian High School in Hull, she enrolled at Northwestern Classical Academy for one year, followed by summer classes at Westmar College in LeMars. At the age of seventeen, she had earned her teaching certificate and began teaching in the Capel Township Country Schools, four years at #6, and one year at #5. On August 25, 1953, she was united in marriage to Tim R. Kooima, at the Hull Protestant Reformed Church with the Rev. S. Cammenga officiating. They lived in Hull for a short time before moving to Hopewell, Virginia, in the summer of 1954, where Tim finished his military training. The following year, Tim was deployed to Korea, and Clarine and their newborn daughter returned to the Kooiker farm near Boyden. After Tim’s honorable discharge in April of 1956, their family moved to a farm place near Doon and later to a farm near Rock Valley. In 1974, they settled on a farm south of Doon, where they remained living until retiring to Hull in 2007. In September of 2020, Clarine became a resident of Whispering Heights in Rock Valley. Clarine was a long-time member of the Hull Protestant Reformed Church, where she played the organ and taught Sunday School. She had been an active participant in the church’s Ladies Aid since 1953 and was part of the Wealth Bible Study. She was also a charter member of the Hull Protestant Reformed Christian School Guild. Clarine loved to spend time with her family and attended their various extracurricular activities, especially those that involved music. She enjoyed the years they spent living on the farm, where she maintained a large vegetable garden and in earlier years, she often made clothes for her young children. She and Tim were blessed to be able to travel together, and in her free time she enjoyed reading and playing the piano. Survivors include her husband of almost 69 years, Tim, of Hull; two daughters and their husbands, Melinda and Marv Van Maanen, of Doon; and Sharon and John Keizer, of Hull; four sons and their wives, Steve and Rachel Kooima, Glenn and Krista Kooima, Kevin and Joan Kooima, and Mark and Nancy Kooima, all of Hull; 27 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Johanna Westra, of Hull; two brothers and their wives, Alvin and Sally Kooiker, of Hull; and A.
