Betty J Smith

Betty J Smith Betty J. Smith, 94, Maumee, Ohio formerly of Schneider Road, Toledo, Ohio passed peacefully Tuesday, August 9, 2022, at The Grove in Oakleaf Village, Sylvania, Ohio. Born July 23, 1928, in Toledo, Ohio to Ernest and Prudence (Hull) Wotring. A 1946 proud graduate of Libbey High School. Preceded in death by her son, Mark A. Johns, brother, Ernest Wotring Jr, sister, Virginia Clancy. Survived by daughter, Connie Johns, son, Ronald (Tina) Johns, grandchildren, Chaz (Sinny Ye) Madrid, Brittany Walker, Ronald Johns Jr, and great grandson, Maddox Madrid. A career of waitressing, with over 30 years at the Surf Supper Club, Betty made a lasting impression on so many people. It seemed as though she knew everyone, seldom could one go anywhere that she didn’t know someone or they knew her. She made friends wherever she went. Betty was well-liked and well-respected, with a big heart and would ensure her friends and other acquaintances in the community older than her, or not as mobile had help with groceries or meals. This big heart, of course, generously extended to her children and grandchildren. A woman full of wisdom, that she imparted to her children and grandchildren, lovingly referred to as “Mom-isms”, that they will use forever as roadmaps to a successful and happy life. She loved music, especially Big Band, if you played it, no matter her mental or physical state that day, she would always smile and start humming or singing along. Betty also enjoyed dancing and baseball, the Tigers were her favorite team. As dementia progressed, Betty never lost her wonderful sense of humor and had an infectious laugh. She never complained. She was a giver, she was strong and independent, a blessing to all the lives she touched. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you for the loving care and compassion shown Betty by nurse Melinda, aid Amy and everyone else at The Grove that contributed to her well being these past few months. Thank you also to Hospice of Northwest Ohio staff and nurse Chris for providing care, dignity and support to Betty and family. Graveside services will be held Tuesday, August 16, 2022, 12 noon at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park Cemetery. The family suggests memorials to the American Cancer Society.
