Betty Ray Murrell

Betty Ray Evans Murrell, 91, widow of Alfred Washington Murrell, III, died Thursday, August 11, 2022, at Prisma Health Tuomey.

Born August 22, 1930, in Sumter, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Robeson Evans and the late Hattie Phillips Evans. Mrs. Murrell was a longtime member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the FAHOLO Sunday School class where she served as the pianist for many years. She retired from NBSC.

Survivors include three children, Al Murrell (Sharon) of Henrico, NC, Richard Murrell (Donna) of Sumter, and Les Murrell (Judy) of Easley; four grandchildren, Mary Beth Mims (Kenneth), Rebecca Breland (Branford), Melissa Chae (Danny), and Thomas Murrell; eight great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a son, Stephen Ray Murrell; and two brothers, Richard Evans, and Bobby Evans.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Trinity United Methodist Church officiated by the Rev. Joseph R. James, Jr. officiating. Private burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home of Richard and Donna Murrell, 114 Conyers St.
