Adela Weiss Obituary

Kathleen Adela Bligh was born on May 5, 1929 on a farm just outside of Gerald. She was the youngest of four children born to Clarence and Stephanie Bligh.

Mom loved nature, even as a young child, and explored every square inch of their farm. She knew where the wild fruit and flowers were and would often go out by herself to pick berries.  She commented that she was glad there was no television because she would have missed so much! She became a stellar gardener and worked very hard to build up a year’s stock of vegetables and canned fruit to see her own family of five throughout the year.

Mom loved all animals, really, but especially cats, her whole life. She told us she would even dress them and put them to bed! Her last beloved cat, Brat Cat, would talk to her when he entered the room and respond in kind when she spoke to him. He was a good companion and a true blessing.

Mom attended Gerald School, walking to school in the summer and being driven by horses in the winter. One day she encountered a young fellow driving a team of horses. “I don’t even know if we waved at each other or said hello.” Little did she know that handsome young fellow would be the love of her life.

Later, Mom attended Esterhazy, Spy Hill and Langenburg High Schools. She then attended Success Business College in Winnipeg and went on to work for the IHC Garage and the Bank of Toronto in Langenburg.

Mom encountered that young fellow driving the horses again and they realized they lived across the road from each other. After creating a well-worn path between the two farms, Mom and Dad were married in June 1951. They began their life together and established a farm six miles north of Gerald. They had a boisterous family of 5, Lynne, David, Murray, Cheryl and Kim. It was a busy house, but always full of laughter and love.

Mom and Dad moved into Langenburg in 1980. Mom worked as activity coordinator at the Langenburg Care Home. She and Dad carried on with a much smaller, but still massive, garden!

They loved playing cards, board games, and going fishing and for Sunday drives to “check the crops”. Mom was active in the church, playing the organ for Sunday services and working shoulder to shoulder with the many other dedicated ladies to organize the annual Used Clothing Sales.

As the years carried on, the family grew and grew. Each grandchild and great-grandchild was welcomed, cherished and spoiled rotten! Nothing made Mom and Dad happier. They just extended the dining room table, and extended it again, and again, and peeled more potatoes and baked more cookies. Mom and Dad believed life was to be lived.

And live it they did.
