Martha Jane Scantlen, a resident of Peabody Retirement Community in North Manchester, Indiana passed away at 3:00 p.m. on August 9, at her residence at the age of 93.

She was born November 22, 1928, Elkhart, Indiana to John and Isabel (Hardy) Chester.

Martha was a graduate of the class of 1948 Coldwater High School, Coldwater Michigan.  In her early years she worked as a sculptor and a cook.  Martha loved art, genealogy, history, writing, played the piano and crafts.  She was a resident of Kosciusko County, Indiana, for the past 40 years where she was a homemaker.

She leaves behind her son, Ron (Vicky) Scantlen, Winona Lake, Indiana, four daughters, Mary Scantlen, Kalamazoo, Michigan, Jane (Craig) Booth, Carmel, Indiana, Ruth Mathis and Cathy (Darry) Piper all of Kokomo, Indiana.  Also surviving are 15 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and her sister:  Ruth Pabreza, Lawrenceville, New Jersey.  She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and three sisters.

Martha’s life will be celebrated with a graveside service at 2:00 p.m. Friday, August 12, 2022, and officiated by Pastor Aaron Scantlen at Knauss Cemetery, Kinderhook, Michigan.  Arrangements entrusted to Redpath-Fruth Funeral Home, 225 Argonne Road, Warsaw, Indiana.
