Terence Whiteside Obituary

It is with great sadness and sorrow that we announce the passing of Terry Whiteside. At the age of 78 years, after several months in hospital battling health issues, Terry found peace to join his beloved wife Pat.

Terry was born in Winnipeg on December 27, 1943 to parents Edna and Douglas Whiteside. He grew up in Elmwood on Chalmers Avenue where he went to school and met his future wife Patricia. Terry worked several jobs in Winnipeg after school before deciding to enlist in the United States Navy in 1964. When stationed at Corpus Christi, TX, he volunteered to serve in the Vietnam War from September of 1965 to Aug 1966. Upon return from Vietnam, while on leave, Terry returned to Winnipeg and married his high school sweetheart Patricia on September 10, 1966. Terry and Pat lived in Rhode Island, Massachusetts until he completed his Naval service and then returned to Winnipeg. Terry became a member of the Winnipeg police force and served the community until retirement in 1998.

Friends and family of Terry growing up describe him as a very tough individual. He always presented as direct but genuine which were attributes highly respected by those that knew him. He never backed down from a bully and always put others before himself even when faced with dangerous situations which were characteristics that assisted in his success in the military and police force.

In the 1980’s Terry joined the Vietnam Veterans Association where he met others who served in the Vietnam War. He was extremely proud of his service and grateful for the relationships he gained from this organization.

Terry had a love for outdoorsman activities such as hunting and fishing. His love for these activities were passed on to his children Grant and Sean during their upbringing and ultimately led Terry and his wife to move to the acreage in Cooks Creek, Manitoba in 1977. Upon retirement he then moved to waterfront property in Lee River to spend his days doing what he enjoyed. Terry and Pat spent a lot of their retirement travelling the world and spending winters away from our cold climate.

He is survived by his sons Grant and Sean (Trena), grandchildren Kayla and Devon, brother Derek (Rose), brother-in-law Gerry McDougall and nieces Janelle and Lisa. Terry is predeceased by his parents Douglas and Edna, brother Barry, sister Lee-Anne McDougall.

A celebration of Terry's life will be held will be held at the Elmwood Legion #9 at 920 Nairn Avenue on Sunday, September 18, 2022 at 11:00am
