Obituary

Evalyn R. Seiter, age 86, of Marion, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, August 6, 2022, at Marion following a brief illness.

On February 18, 1936, Evalyn was born at home on Wood Street in Marion, Ohio, the youngest of three children of the late Earl Franklin and Lulu Bell (Robinson) Mehaffey.  She graduated from Pleasant High School in the class of 1954.

Following graduation, Evalyn worked at the Marion Engineer Depot as an assistant to one of the managers.  She also waited tables at the Marion Country Club.  Around that time, she also wanted to learn to play the guitar and scheduled her first of many guitar lessons on Easter Day of 1957 with Donald “D.W.” Seiter.  Nine months later, after Don serenading Evalyn on many dates, they were married on December 15, 1957, at Prospect Street United Methodist Church. They cherished their sixty two years of marriage and lovingly raised two daughters: Donna and Jane.  He preceded her in death on April 13, 2020.

A loving homemaker, Evalyn took pride in caring for her husband and family.  She helped at home, until her daughters were in school.  Then, in 1966, Evalyn became the first female bus driver for the Pleasant School systems.  She enjoyed driving the school bus for twenty plus years.

Very faithful, Evalyn was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church on Smeltzer Road, where she served as a deacon and candle re-filler.  She volunteered to help the ladies of the church for most events too, such as: meals, garage sales, etc.  She and Don also enjoyed attending the church she grew up in, Prospect Street United Methodist Church.  She also was a member of the Pleasant Homemakers and the Pleasant Alumni Association, where she had served as their secretary and president for many terms.  She especially loved planning the meals and decorating for their annual alumni dinner.

Sharing a love for traveling with her family, one of their favorite places to visit was Canada. Don would load up Evalyn and the girls into their bus that he converted into a camper and they would head north to their favorite campsite in Hilton Beach, Canada. They also started traveling south to Florida in the early 1950's and continued up until 2019, taking their parents, children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews down there to explore and make memories that are now cherished.  Don even built their own vacation home down there.

Having a huge heart, Evalyn especially loved all animals.  She never wanted to help much on their farm, but couldn’t help herself when it came to their animals.  She loved feeding all of the baby animals, especially their lambs, and she welcomed every cat to their farm.  She enjoyed tending to her flowers every day.  Evalyn also was an avid beanie baby collector, loved watching her soap operas and basketball games, and eating caramels.

The matriarch of the family, Evalyn always made sure her family was safe and protected.  She especially loved being “Ganny”,  spoiling her beloved grandchildren with whatever they wanted, often playing euchre with them until well past their bedtime.  She cherished her time with her family and friends, and often filled the entire house with her boisterous laugh.

She will be missed by her two daughters: Donna (Steve) Neiderkohr, and Jane Furniss (Fiancé Herb Bender); six grandchildren: Amanda (Nick) Mayne, David (Elaine) Strine, Nicole Strine, Adam Furniss (Fiancé Lindsey Bender), Chad (Allisha) Furniss, and Mariah Furniss; one great-granddaughter, Abigayle Place; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Including her husband and parents, Evalyn was preceded in death by her brothers: Sam and Paul Mehaffey.

Her family will greet friends from 11 am – 12:30 pm on Thursday, August 11, 2022, at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 4535 Smeltzer Rd, Marion.  Services honoring her life will follow there at 12:30 pm, with Pastor Ed Wahl officiating.  Burial will follow in Marion Cemetery.
