Louise Gower Gosma Obituary

Louise Alice (Roth) Gower Gosma January 25, 1932 – August 6, 2022 After her daughters kissed her goodbye and she knew her son was on the way, Louise Alice (Roth) Gower Gosma, AKA Weezie, age 90, made her way to her heavenly home on the evening of August 6, 2022. She lived with her second husband, James “Jim” Eugene Gosma, who survives her, at the Annapolitan in Annapolis, MD. Born on January 25, 1932, in Nazareth, PA, she was the second daughter of Chester and Erma (Sperling) Roth. As a young teen, she began working as a soda jerk at Heckman’s Drug Store in Nazareth. Upon graduating from Nazareth High School in 1949, she was offered a scholarship to become a business teacher, but during those times, it seemed an impossible challenge for a small-town girl like her. Instead, she began working as a proofreader at Mack Printing Company in Easton, PA. That summer, she impressed Duwane “Dewey” Alan Gower at the Nazareth Pool with her swimming and high diving performances, as well as her great beauty. After being introduced and talking briefly to the 19-year-old, shy young man, Louise suggested they get together sometime. “I’m leaving for Navy boot camp tomorrow,” he said, “but I’ll look you up when I come home on leave.” They married on November 18, 1950, and moved to Norfolk, VA, where they lived until 1952, returning to Pennsylvania. Denise (married to Michael Murden) now of Suffolk, VA, was born in 1953; Michael (married to Susan Crissman), now of Luck, WI, in 1955; and Annette (married to Gregory Shelton), now of Chesapeake Beach, MD, in 1956. Louise and Dewey’s lives took them to homes in Springfield and Ludlow, MA; back to Nazareth, PA; then to Mechanicsburg, PA. Everywhere they went, they became active members of a Lutheran church and made many friends. Blessed with a beautiful alto voice, Louise loved to sing, and over the years she sang with various church and community choirs. She supported her young family by working as a typist, then secretary for an insurance company after 31-year-old Dewey was disabled by a heart condition. She later worked for Taylor-Wharton Company in Easton and Harrisburg, PA, for more than 29 years, retiring in 1996 as a Logistics Manager and Buyer. She and Dewey enjoyed travel and socializing after his heart transplant in 1989. After Dewey died in 1999, she moved to Virginia Beach, VA, in 2002, where she met and married Jim on January 17, 2004. Louise and Jim traveled, spent time with family and friends, bowled, attended their respective churches, and made puzzles until their health began to decline. They moved to Annapolis in 2018 to be closer to family who could care for them. Louise was a lifelong lover of all animals, especially cats. After leaving her parents’ home, there was never a time she didn’t live with at least one cat, and she left her most recent feline companions, Ruby and Katie, in the care of her family. She was proud of her German heritage and rural PA roots; loved history, ice cream, and a good dirty joke; enjoyed swimming and traveling; liked to read; and became a league bowler after her retirement. Besides her husband and children, she is survived by her sister, Mildred Sours; grandchildren Angela Vogt, Dennis Taylor, John Gower, Michael C. Gower, Sonia Marinescu, and Elizabeth Herda; great-grandchildren Dashel Vogt, Roman Taylor, Ruby Taylor, Caleb Vogt, and Jackson Herda; and nieces Jocelyn Starner and Andrea Bickert. In addition to Dewey and her parents, Grandson Daniel Gower, brother-in-law Frank Sours, son-in-law Michael Taylor, and niece Kathleen Herfurth predeceased her. A memorial service will be held at the Hardesty Funeral Home in Annapolis, MD, on Friday, August 12, and another later in her beloved Nazareth, PA, where her ashes will be interred next to Dewey. She asked that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to any animal welfare agency, the Alzheimer's Association, or St. John’s Lutheran Church in Nazareth, PA. May she rest in everlasting peace.
