ST. ALBANS-Brian A. Hanson, husband of Glenice Martin Hanson, died on August 5, 2022, at his home in St. Albans. He was born in 1930, in St. Albans, to Glenn H. and Vera (Emery) Hanson. He attended the St. Albans Village School until he entered high school. After one year at Hartland Academy, he entered Maine Central Institute and graduated in 1949. In 1950, he enlisted in the US Navy. During his four year enlistment, he married Glenice and sons, Daniel and James were born. He served as a dental technician at Newport, RI, Brunswick Naval Air Station, Submarine Base, New London, CT, and aboard the ships, USS Atka and USS Fulton. After his discharge from the Navy, the family moved to Farmington where Brian enrolled at the Teachers College and graduated in 1958. His son, Mark, now deceased, was born during this time. His first teaching job was for one year at North Elementary in Skowhegan. The family then moved back to St. Albans where he became the teaching principal at the school he attended as a boy. After five years there, he took a teaching position in Newport for one and one half years. In 1965, he became the consultant for the Newspaper in the Classroom program sponsored by the Maine Daily Newspaper Association at the Maine State Department of Education in Augusta. After a successful year at that position, he became the Department’s Consultant for Instructional Television where for three years he selected and scheduled the in-school broadcasts on Maine Public Television. In 1970, Brian became the Supervising Principal at Newport Elementary-Jr. High. After receiving a Master’s Degree in Education, he served as Superintendent of Schools for MSD 13, the Bingham area, for three years. In 1975, he received a Certificate of Advanced Study (superintendency) from UMO. From 1975 to 1978, Brian served as Principal of the Pittston and Randolph Elementary Schools in MSAD 11. Tired of the long commute, he obtained the Principal position in Clinton. After a transfer to Lawrence High for six months, Brian retired in 1984 ending a twenty six year varied and rewarding career in the field of education. In 2015, Brian received a 55 year Chevron from the Lions International for his service as a member of the Hartland-St. Albans Lions Club. He served twice as President and as Secretary-Treasurer and Director. He was a District 41-I Cabinet Member and Officer several times. In 2014, the Lions International made him a Melvin Jones Fellow for distinguished humanitarian services. He was a long standing member of the Corinthian Masonic Lodge #95 in Hartland. A mostly lifelong resident of St. Albans, Brian served as selectman, Assessor, and a member of the planning board. He was also a long time member of Corinna Post 73 American Legion, where he was a Bingo caller and treasurer for over 45 years. He is survived by his wife, Glenice, of 71 years; sons: Daniel and wife Kathy and James; grandchildren: Karmen (Marshall) Hinman, Kateena (James) Hook, Jamie Lee Hanson, Kyle Hanson, Thomas Fick and Karen Miller; six great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Barbara; special nephew, Aaron Hanson; and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; son, Mark; daughter-in-law, Beate Hanson; and two brothers, Winston and Gareth. A graveside Masonic Service will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, August 27, 2022, at the Village Cemetery, Cemetery Road, St. Albans.
