Sara E. Mongan Obituary

Sara Ethel Mongan, age 94, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Saturday the 6th of August. Sara was born in Alabama on March 24, 1928 to Annie Mae and Young Howell Vickers. Sara, the eldest of eight siblings, was a caring and faithful sister.

Born in 1928, Sara lived through some of the world’s most significant events. Sara was fearless in the face of adversity and found her strength through her relationship with Christ. She was known to always have an interesting story to tell and especially loved telling them to her grand and great grandchildren.

In 1943 Sara married her childhood sweetheart, James Thompson. In 1944, James, a marine, was sent to San Diego, California for training. Without hesitation, at the age of sixteen, Sara packed her belongings and crossed the country by bus to work near James as a “Rosie the Riveter.” After serving her country for the war effort she returned home expecting their first child.  Sara and James had a total of three beautiful children before his death in 1952.

In 1953, Sara and her children moved to Graniteville, South Carolina, where she was employed with Graniteville company for 37 years. In 1954, she met and married Laurie Prichard (deceased). A busy mother of three, she was an active volunteer at the local schools where they attended.  Sara also was a Sunday School teacher and active member of Calvary Baptist Church.

In 1976, Sara moved to Belvedere, South Carolina, and on February 27th married her loving husband of 46 years, Jim Mongan. Sara was a member of Belvedere First Baptist church and served as Worthy Matron at her local Eastern Star lodge. Sara was active in the local Red Hat club.  She was an avid gardener and seamstress who loved needlework of all types. She made crochet hats for the homeless and for babies in our local hospitals.  Sara was an animal lover with a heart for strays. Her home was always open and full of love.

Sara Mongan left her family and friends a 94-year legacy of grace, strength, love, and wisdom. She demonstrated kindness to all who had the pleasure of knowing her and we will miss her every day.

Sara is survived by her husband, Jim Mongan; her children, Sheila (Ben) Joiner, Ronnie (Debbie) Thompson and Wayne (Kathy) Thompson; grandchildren, Trina Haslinger, Tammy Crawford, Ken Toole, Gina Matthews, Natasha Friesen, Jessica Thompson and Patrick Thompson; great-grandchildren, Laken Toole, Matthew Haslinger, Austin Toole, Ross Haslinger, T.J Crawford, Cody Crawford, Samantha Basco, Noah Potter, Samantha Potter, Joshua Fair, Taylor Matthews, Noah Matthews, Keegan Sitler, Kyler Frazier, Oliver Thompson, Emma Kate Thompson and Elise Friesen; great-great-grandchildren, Liam Crawford and Avery Crawford; sisters, Mahalah Vickers Robinson and Mary Vickers Yonce. Sara was preceded in death by her sister; Martha Senterfeit; her brothers, William Vickers, Winston Vickers, Truitt Vickers, Marcus Vickers, and Earl Vickers.

A graveside service will be held at 11:15 AM on Wednesday, August 10, 2022 in Sunset Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Rowland-Ford Funeral Home prior to the service from 10:00 AM until 10:45 AM.
