Cleo Earle Shields, age 63, was born on January 31, 1959, in Leon, Iowa to Robert E. and Margaret E. (Akers) Shields. He left this life from his Lamoni, Iowa home on August 5, 2022. Cleo grew up in Grand River, Iowa and attended grade school and junior high at Grand Valley Schools in Grand River and Kellerton. The family moved to Lamoni in 1974, where Cleo attended four years of high school. Cleo has two siblings, Connie and Curtis. Cleo married Denise Rex on February 8, 1977, to which two children, were born, Travis and Tara. They later divorced in 1986. In 1999, Cleo married Joyce (Elliott) Hynden. He hated the word “step” when it came to family, so in 1999, he gained three daughters, Michelle, Lisa, and Carrie. He worked at Plaza Furniture in Leon, Iowa for 26 years and Crown Colony in Lamoni for 22 years. Cleo enjoyed doing crosswords, tinkering with autos, riding his “hog” with Cody, and joking with his grandkids and drawing goofy pictures for them. Cleo was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Margaret Shields. He is survived by his wife, Joyce Shields of Lamoni; five children, Travis Shields of Carlisle, Iowa, Tara Shields of Leon, Shellie & Kevin Klommhaus of Mt. Ayr, Iowa, Lisa & Travis Jeanes of Lamoni, and Carrie Phelps & fiancé, Curt Corwin, of Lamoni; 11 grandchildren, Sierra Shields, Kolby, Kaleb, and Kadan Hansen, Kaitlyn & Ryan Parrott, Kasydi and Kade Klommhaus, Ryean, Hagen, and Caylie Phelps, and Macie Jeanes; great grandson, Knox Parrott; sister, Connie McCarl & Richard of Des Moines, Iowa; brother, Curt Shields & Kathy of Lamoni; one nephew, Cody Shields; and many other family and friends. A memorial gathering will be held at the Lamoni Community Center in Lamoni, Iowa 5 – 8 p.m. on Friday, August 12, 2022. Arrangements were through the Slade – O’Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa.
