Dwight William Herkelman Obituary

Dwight William Herkelman, age 89, of Leon, Iowa, the son of Waldo William and Mildred Isabel (Dasher) Herkelman, was born June 2, 1933, at Atlantic, Iowa. He died at Westview Acres Care Center in Leon, Iowa on August 4, 2022. Dwight grew up in the Dexter, Iowa area and graduated from Dexfield High School in 1951. Later that same year he was united in marriage to Wilma Louise Brooks. They were blessed with five children, Samuel, Robert, Melvin, Linda, and Marion. Wilma passed away in 1958, soon after Marion’s birth. On December 31, 1958, Dwight married Dixie Glee Williams. Her two daughters, Connie and Carmen, became part of his family as they raised their children together along with their own daughter, Dwighta, known as Dee. Over his lifetime, Dwight worked various jobs including being a hired farm hand, city worker, plumber, school custodian, and trolley driver. He also volunteered as a fireman. He was a member of the New Salem Baptist Church south of Leon, the Leon Lions Club, served as a district governor, and was a new member of the Cowl-Scott American Legion Post #80 in Leon. Preceding him in death were his parents; wives, Wilma and Dixie; daughter, Carmen; and sister, Delores Tate. Survivors include his children, Sam and Karen Herkelman of Shell Knob, Missouri, Robert and Jan Herkelman of Brandon, Florida, Melvin Herkelman of Walcott, Iowa, Connie Probasco of Des Moines, Iowa, Linda and Terry Miller of Portage, Pennsylvania, Dee and Jerry Winebrenner of Leon, Iowa, and Marion and Kathryn Van Fosson of Lititz, Pennsylvania; 18 grandchildren; 39 great grandchildren; 11 great, great grandchildren; siblings, Marilyn Burkheimer of Ames, Iowa, Carol Van Fosson of Mitchellville, Iowa, and David Herkelman of Cimmaron, Kansas; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and many friends. Funeral services will be held at the Slade – O’Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa at 10 a.m. Thursday, August 11, 2022, with Pastor Jim Fisher officiating. A committal service will be in the Dexter Cemetery, Dexter, Iowa on Thursday, at 2:30 p.m. with burial following. Visitation is at the funeral home Wednesday beginning at 2 p.m. with family receiving friends 5 – 7 p.m.
