Our loving father, Edward Martin, died peacefully on Friday, August 5, 2022, at home surrounded by all who loved him. Dad was born on October 29, 1936 in Mount Kisco, NY.

Dad was a member of the Irish American Club, Mount Carmel Sportsman’s Club, President of the former Poughkeepsie Booster Club and an honorary member of the Vassar College Plumbing Department.

Dad spent 38 years working at Hudson River Psychiatric Center as a transportation employee.

This is where the love story begins. Here, he met his loving wife, of 65 years, Mary Ellen McGowan A.K.A. Mickey. From there, they created a beautiful family of 5 children.

Dad, also known as “Poppy”, adored all of his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Our dad showed us how to be an amazing husband, father, grandfather, sibling, uncle and friend.

He was an amazing role model in so many ways. His grandchildren would say that Poppy was the best listener and confidant He was their guiding light through thick and thin. He was content with his life and his focus was his family.

Edward leaves behind his loving wife of 65 years, Mary Ellen and 5 children: Daughter Mary Balfour, husband Rick, grandchildren Lindsey and Michael and great grandchild Michael. Son John Martin, wife Michelle and granddaughter Kierstin. Son Edward Martin, wife Susan, grandchildren Alyssa, Brandon, and Kyle and great grandchildren Hudson and Dylan. Daughter Joan Horning, husband Ed and grandchildren Erin, Brianna and Danielle. Son Michael Martin. In-laws Robert and Susan Buckley, Katherine Gorman and Patricia Turner and several nieces and nephews.

Edward is predeceased by his sisters Joanne and Pat and survived by his brother James.

This in itself is his legacy.

Calling hours will be Wednesday, August 10, 2022 from 4-7PM at the Wm. G. Miller & Son F.H., Inc., 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie, NY 12603. Services will be at 7PM in the Funeral Home. Entombment will be at the convenience of the family. A gathering of friends and family with be arranged at a later date to celebrate Ed’s life.
