Robert J. "Sed" Powell

Robert J. “Sed” Powell, 76, of New Philadelphia, and formerly of New Martinsville, West Virginia, passed away on Saturday, August 6, 2022 in the Community Hospice Truman House. Born September 1, 1945 in Wetzel County, West Virginia he was a son of the late Joseph Goudy Sr. and Thelma Smith Goudy. Sed was also preceded in death by his brothers, Gary Powell, Victor and Dale Goudy. Sed proudly served his country with the United States Navy for 22 years. Following his discharge, he received his bachelors and master’s degrees in Art Education and was an Art Teacher in several different schools in Florida. He loved working with his hands, and was extremely proud of the house he built himself in New Martinsville. Painting and sculpting were his passion, as well as, traveling to almost every art museum in the United States. Sed also enjoyed traveling the world, reading, and was a member of the First Church of God in New Martinsville. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Stein Powell whom he married on July 19, 2014; daughter, Kerry Powell; son, Shawn Powell both of Florida; grandchildren, Brett, Kyle, Megan; great grandchildren, Corey, Sabastian; sisters, Jo Ann Thomas of West Virginia, Joyce Calhoun of Maryland, and Cathy Harman of Sardis, Ohio. Cremation has been entrusted to the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home and Crematory at Dover. There are no services or calling hours.
