Carl Spencer Phipps, MD, passed away at Salemtowne Rehabilitation Center on Saturday, August 6, 2022.  He was born on July 1, 1935, to the late Carl Ulysses Phipps and Mamie Boykin Phipps in Johnston County, NC.   Carl has been a cornerstone of the local medical community for more than 50 years. He practiced internal medicine and endocrinology before becoming the first Vice President for Medical Affairs of Forsyth Memorial Hospital. He tirelessly cared for the underserved as the medical director of the Community Care Center before retiring in 2017. Carl loved spending time with his family, who referred to him as Big Guy and will miss him dearly. Big Guy was committed to his work and family. He loved golfing, UNC sports, and traveling.   Carl is survived by his wife of 43 years, Peggy Lambert Phipps; four children and their spouses, Sandra and Linwood Jones, David and Lynn Phipps, Kim and Phil Lanning, and John and Amanda Phipps; fifteen grandchildren, Elizabeth, Spencer, Aaron, Margaret, Claire, Catherine, Caroline, Josh, Faith, Stephen, Jackson, Angel, Carl, David, and Lilly; several great-grandchildren; and sister, Janet Eddins.   A memorial service will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, August 13, 2022, at Salem Funerals and Cremations, 2951 Reynolda Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106. A reception will follow the memorial service.   In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Community Care Center.
