Mattie Louise Barlow Ames Gwaltney died July 31, 2022   She was born in Isle of Wight county on September 3 1921. She passed away 34 days shy of 101 years old.  She lived a full and exciting life. She worked for two congressmen and Naval Intelligence.  She had a Virginia Real Estate license.  She worked as a hostess in colonial dress at Colonial Williamsburg.

She outlived her husbands and siblings. She married Fred F Ames in 1944 and lived at “Kaleda” in Gloucester, VA for many years until his death in 1968. She married Hugh Gwaltney in 1985 who died eight years later. Mattie was the oldest of her siblings: Frances Mae Barlow Jeffries, John Barlow and Leonard Barlow.

She had two children John Frederick Ames and Mary Louise Ames Shannon. She had three Grandchildren John Frederick Ames, Jr, Mary Catherine Shannon Batcha and Francis Xavier Shannon IV. She also had nine great grandchildren.

She was a member Ware Episcopal Church and the Women’s club of Gloucester and the Kings Daughters
