MaryLou Gates, formerly MaryLou Cathers, age 85, passed away in Colorado on Tuesday, July 19, 2022. She was born on August 21, 1936, daughter of the late Margaret Grace. MaryLou was a 1955 graduate of East High School. In her senior year, she went to work as a nanny at Finnell Farms taking care of the Finnell’s two sons, the late Robert “Bob” Finnell, Jr. and Roger Finnell. The Finnells soon became her second family and she worked alongside them growing fresh fruits and vegetables, selling them at the family's roadside market. She later worked as an occupational aide at the State Rehabilitation Center in Johnstown. MaryLou married and had two children. She continued to work as an occupational aide for the state of Pennsylvania until her retirement. She moved out to Colorado in 1998 to be near her daughter. Marylou enjoyed gardening, cooking and spending time with her grandson. MaryLou is survived by her children, Karen Cooper (Scott) and Keith Gates; grandson, Justin Cooper; brother, Roger Finnell (Diane); and sister-in-law, Deborah Finnell. Family and friends are welcomed to attend a Memorial Service at the Dusckas-Taylor Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 5151 Buffalo Road (at Hannon Rd. in Harborcreek Twp.) on Thursday, August 11, at 10 am. MaryLou will then be laid to rest at North East Cemetery.
