Eva M. Keledy Obituary

Eva M. Keledy, 94, of Hamilton, passed away on Wednesday, August 3, 2022, at Rose Hill Assisted Living in Robbinsville, New Jersey. Mrs. Keledy was born and raised in Hungary. In early 1945, she survived the hardships during and after the 50 day Siege of Budapest. She married Francis Keledy in 1948, during the time when Hungary was becoming a communist police state dominated by the Soviet Union. In 1956 after the Hungarian Revolution, Francis and Eva, along with their 5-year-old son, Robert, managed to escape, by crossing the border into Austria. By May of 1957 they realized their long-term goal of coming to America. They arrived at McGuire Air Force Base, were processed at Camp Kilmer and settled in Rego Park, Queens, New York. During the 1960’s Mrs. Keledy worked part-time as a cosmetologist at Alexander’s Department Store on Queens Boulevard. In 1969 the family moved to the High Crest Lake Community in West Milford, New Jersey. Mrs. Keledy became involved with the HCL Women’s Club and she and her husband enjoyed many years playing in the HCL Bridge Club. She was also a devoted member of St. Joseph’s R.C. Church. In the 1980’s, during challenging times, Mrs. Keledy obtained her driver’s license and returned to the workforce in sales at Fortunoff Department Store in Wayne. She always had fun work stories to share, including the various celebrities she met, and served at the store, including top customer Phil Rizzuto. Her life changed forever when her husband Francis passed away in 1992. She continued working, retiring in 2005 after 20 years of service. Predeceased by her parents, Julius and Irene (Matzek) Vasanits; her husband, Francis and her son, Robert, she is survived by her son, Peter Keledy and his wife, Susan; her grandchildren, Dylan and Shane; and her niece, Eva Palfi, of Piliscsaba, Hungary. Visitation for family and friends will be held Tuesday, August 9, 2022 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Saul Colonial Home. 3795 Nottingham Way, Hamilton Square, New Jersey. A prayer service will be offered at 7:00 p.m. Cremation services will be private. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, August 25, 2022 at 11:00 am at St Joseph’s R.C. Church, 454 Germantown Road, West Milford, New Jersey 07480. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mrs. Keledy’s memory to Covenant House, by visiting In Memory Of at inmemof.org.
