The Reverend Tyrone Livingston Broadus was born Thursday, February 3, 1944 in Washington, District of Columbia to Arvid Wallace Broadus and Mary Louise Jackson Broadus, both parents preceded him in death.

Reverend Broadus accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age. Always working for the Lord, whether at Mount Nebo Missionary Baptist Church in the early 1950’s, in DeFuniak Springs, Florida; Beulah First Missionary Baptist Church in Fort Walton Beach, Florida in the late 1950’s; True Gospel Missionary Baptist Church in Washington, District of Columbia, in the 1960’s; Vermont Avenue Missionary Baptist Church in Washington, District of Columbia, 1970’s through 1987; returning to DeFuniak Springs, Florida worshipping and later Pastoring Mount Nebo Missionary Baptist Church until 2007 when called to Saint Mark Missionary Baptist Church in Laurel Hill, Flowersview Community, Florida; served as 1st Vice Moderator, District Senior Women’s Ministry Spiritual Advisor for the Progressive Missionary Baptist District Association of West Florida and was appointed as one of the State Historians for the Progressive Missionary and Education Baptist State Convention of Florida, Inc., until death on Saturday, August 6, 2022.

Reverend Broadus graduated from the sixth grade (elementary level) at Tivoli High School in DeFuniak Springs, Florida after, he attended Carver Hill School for 8th and 9th grades and completed his academic years by graduating from Cardoza High School in Washington, District of Columbia. His love for the structure of military began here, where he was a Lieutenant Colonel Cadet while attending this Washington, District of Columbia public school. It was during this same year he participated in the “March On Washington”, where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., gave his “I Have A Dream” speech. In November 1963, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated; both events would affect his life.

Serving in the United States Army (1965-1967), Tyrone was in the top five “5” of his leadership school, when he was given the opportunity to select his duty station, he chose the Military District of Washington, District of Columbia, United States Army Honor Guard. As the first African American assigned to that unit, he integrated the Presidential Firing Party later becoming one of thirteen (13) original John F. Kennedy Honor Guards. He received an Honorable Discharge from the United States Army and immediately worked as a civilian where he joined the Metropolitan Police Department of Washington, District of Columbia. While serving as a policeman, he was promoted to Detective, later retiring after many injuries at 28 years old.

In 2007, the Saint Mark Missionary Baptist Church called Reverend Broadus as their Pastor. He often heard remarking, “I guess God wasn’t finished with me yet.” He was very proud that he “stepped out” ordaining two women. These two women served at Mount Nebo Missionary Baptist Church and Saint Mark Missionary Baptist Church, respectively. Reverend Broadus loved and served his church at Saint Mark Missionary Baptist Church including the community of Flowersview faithfully until his death in 2022.

As a resident of DeFuniak Springs he accepted various leadership roles with The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), Tivoli Historical Society, Walton County Black Caucus, Walton County Heritage Society and many others in service to the people of Walton and neighboring counties of Florida. Reverend Broadus practiced what he taught, preached, believed and lived two of the great commandments: 

               Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul and with all thy mind. (The first and great commandment); 

               “Thou  shalt love thy neighbor as thyself” (Matthew 22: 37-39).

Reverend Broadus leaves a daughter, Angela Hogan-White; three grandchildren: Tatianna Davis, Michael Davis and Kiana Davis (deceased); four great grandchildren; a faithful sister, the Reverend Gwendolyn Dolores Leftwich; two beloved nephews: Howell W. Leftwich III (Natarsha) and Michael W. Leftwich (Sabrina); a loyal and loving niece, Collette Nichols; his beloved aunt, Faye W. Thacker and her husband Scott Thacker of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; five great nieces and one nephew: Aniya (who gave him his treasured nickname “Uncle Beard”); Julian, Makayla, Nevaeh, Shanita and Tiera (his “six pack”); a cousin, Sandra Macon and a host of relatives, he claimed one and all; “everybody” was family to him.
