John J McMorrow

John Joseph McMorrow Jr., 80 of Millis, MA passed away on August 3, 2022. Son of the late John Joseph McMorrow Sr. and Florence (Masino) Pollitt and devoted husband to Joan (Betti) McMorrow for 55 years. A devoted Father to, John and his wife Rachel Lennon McMorrow, Michelle and her husband Anthony Brandel, Joan and her husband Scott Nichols and to his son Joe McMorrow. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. John is the oldest of four, he is the cherished brother of David McMorrow, sister Betsy and husband Glen Peavy, and sister Janice and husband Dick Rourke.

Anyone that knew John, knew he was a man of great integrity with strong family values. John grew up in Norwood, MA and graduated from Norwood High School in 1960, and then enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in December that same year. He was trained to be a helicopter mechanic and crew chief and soon was deployed to Vietnam where he served a tour of duty. After serving four years as an enlisted Marine, John decided to take a break from the military and began working as a supervisor at TS Grant department store where he met his wife, Joan Betti. Joan and John married on April 1, 1967 and forever joked it was just an April fools prank. A loving and devoted couple, they eagerly started their family and had four young children, one just about every 2 years. Realizing they needed more space, John and Joan moved a little further west to Millis, MA in 1974 into a new home and neighborhood of young families where they have resided since.

Over the years John had several occupations, he worked long hard hours, often working multiple jobs to ensure his family could have experiences that he wished he had growing up. Some of his most memorable jobs were with Pan American Airlines as a mechanic where he got to fly on the first Boeing 747, being the owner and operator of a Snap-On tool business, joining the United Auto Workers and General Motors and finally until retirement as a Facilities Manager for Tri-County Regional Vocational Technical High School in Franklin, MA.

Above all John’s occupations, his real passion was being a Marine. John re-enlisted in 1975, this time with the Marine Reserves where he joined squadron HML-771 in South Weymouth, MA. As a Reservist, John was able to reconnect with his love of helicopters and contributing to a greater good, to something bigger than himself. He enjoyed teaching others and took great pride in sharing his experiences with younger Marines that looked up to him for his knowledge, patience, and humble approach to solving problems. John retired a Master Sargent from the United States Marine Corps Reserve in 1994, shortly after a year of active duty during the Gulf War. He was never boastful and never wanted to be labeled a hero. He was doing his part and his duty in this world - God, Family, Country - Semper Fidelis.

To know John was to know a humble, giving and nurturing man; this is what drew people to John. His door was always open and his table always had a place set for you. You didn’t need to call first or be invited. Growing up in the McMorrow house meant friends were always welcome, for the day, for the night or however long it took to get back on your feet. John was a loyal husband, father, brother and friend, loved and respected by everyone that knew him. He will forever live in our memories and more importantly, his mark on us makes us better people. He instilled his values into those that knew and loved him through example, demonstrating compassion, acceptance and support through good times and bad. We love you husband, dad, brother, and friend, for the love you gave and the imprint you left on our hearts.

The family thanks John’s daughter Michelle (McMorrow) Brandel for the special attention and loving care she provided for him over the past six years. And the family expresses their gratitude for all the great people that assisted and cared for John these past few years. Your tireless dedication to his comfort and well-being is deeply appreciated.

Visiting hours will be Wednesday August 10th 4-8 at the Roberts Mitchell Caruso FH, 90 Curve st, Millis.
Funeral Mass will be Thursday August 11, 2022 10AM at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 111 Exchange St, Millis.
