Ronald McClear Obituary

Ronald McClear, “Ron”, 76, of Somerville, died peacefully on August 4, 2022. Born in Jersey City to the late Lester M. and Marian McClear (nee Gyula), Ron was a graduate of the former Madison (now Old Bridge) High School, Class of 1964. He joined the United States Army right out of high school, and proudly served his country until his honorable discharge in 1967. He served two and half years in Germany and had training in land surveying. Ron took this skillset home with him and started working for Hess Brothers Construction of Parlin. He married the love of his life, Kathleen Alfano in 1969 and settled in Somerville where they raised their family. In 1972, he began his thirty-five-year career with the Somerset County Engineering Department as a Professional Land Surveyor. Ron was a member of The Ancient Order of Hibernians, St. Patrick Division 1, of Somerville, Disabled American Veterans Chapter 16 of Somerville, Middlesex Elks Chapter #1488 of Middlesex, Loyal Order of Moose, Raritan Lodge 1965 of Raritan, and the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 452 of Somerville. He was a life member, dedicating over 30 years at the American Legion Post 12 of Somerville where he was the past Post Commander, Vice Commander, Bar Chairman & Finance Officer; Vice Commander, County Commander and Somerset County DEC; and Department ABC/Gaming Committee as Chairman and Department Vice Commander. Ron was a man of few words and a lot of action. He devoted his time to events and volunteering to assure the American Flag was held in the highest honor. Whether he was laying flags on the graves of veterans, changing them out on Memorial Day and Veterans' Day, assuring they were at half mast and not tattered or torn. Ron firmly believed regardless of politics, you need to support and honor veterans, and it showed in all he did. Ron was known for his stoic nature and heart of gold. He was sarcastic in the best of ways and loved good banter. He accumulated a Snoopy collection his family enjoyed adding to over the years, especially in ornaments for the Christmas tree. Most of all, he enjoyed the quality time they spent together making their house a home of love and good memories. He was preceded in death by his cherished son, Brian and his dear siblings John McClear and Donna Walter. Surviving are his beloved wife, Kathleen McClear, his loving daughter, Jennifer McClear, his dear siblings, Robert McClear, Lorraine McClear, Dianne Koziatiek, and Marion Costas, as well as his nieces, nephews, extended family, and community friends. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 9, 2022, from 4:00 to 8:00PM at Cusick Funeral Home, 80 Mountain Avenue, Somerville. Funeral services will begin at 11:00AM on Wednesday, August 10, 2022, at the funeral home. Friends and family are welcome to gather beginning at 10:00AM.
