Perry Lee Farrar Obituary

Perry Lee "Pete" Farrar, age 91, a resident of Troy, died Friday, August 5, 2022 at Country Cottage in Montgomery. Memorial services will be held on Thursday, August 11, 2022 at 2 pm from the Chapel of Dillard Funeral Home in Troy with the Rev. Brian Dovey officiating and special memories shared by Rachel Garrett, Michelle Blankenship, and Kathryn Kelly. Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 11, 2022 from 1 pm until 2 pm at Dillard Funeral Home in Troy. He is survived by his daughters: Leesa Law (Johnny), Kay Dobbs (Gary); grandchildren: Rachel Garrett (Daniel), Michelle Blankenship (Bobby), Kathryn Kelly (Keith Evans); great grandchildren: Taylor Lee, Ava Garrett, Rhett Garrett, Parker Blankenship; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other family members. He is preceded in death by his children: Gina Farrar Motes and Perry Taylor Farrar. Pete was born in Troup County, Georgia and grew up with an interest in becoming a doctor. He had always been fascinated with medicine but when becoming a doctor wasn’t possible, he considered a second choice, electrical engineering, and intended to enroll at Georgia Tech. However, Pete’s older brother, Bill, had enrolled at Troy State and Pete came to play in a high school baseball game in Troy. Pete fell in love with Troy and Georgia Tech and electrical engineering were forgotten. Pete came to TSU on a football scholarship, completed his degree with a major in English with a minor in math and became a teacher. Pete began his teaching career in 1954 at Troy Junior High School, teaching social studies, math, science and coaching football, basketball, baseball, and track. Although he loved teaching junior high children, he found his passion when he was hired as principal of Cherry Street Elementary School, which later became Laura Montgomery Henderson Elementary. First through fourth graders were a challenge after teaching much older kids but the next 13 years became some of the most pleasant years in his teaching career. Pete retired from teaching on January 1, 1989, but he continued to stay busy. An avid woodworker, Pete built many items for teachers for their school and church classrooms as well as building items for friends and family. Pete was fond of saying, “if it’s made of wood, I can build it!”. He was a faithful member of Park Memorial UMC and served as a Trustee during the building of the Church at its current location. He loved to work in his yard and loved to spoil his granddaughters and any animal that was lucky enough to come into his life. In lieu of flowers, Pete’s family requests that donations be made to Park Memorial UMC, Alice’s Kids (aliceskids.org) or any organization that rescues/cares for animals. The family would like to thank the staff of Country Cottage in Montgomery for the care, kindness and love they showed Mr. Pete for the last 5 years. We will always be in your debt.
