Peacefully, with her daughter Lisa by her side, Katharina Martens, age 87, passed away on Tuesday, August 2, 2022, at her residence in Mitchell.<br><br>She was predeceased by her husband, Abe Martens on February 28, 2006; her son-in-law. Buffalo Brown; her parents Abram and Helena Friesen; brother Abe Friesen; sister Mary Harder, sister Anna Friesen in infancy; as well as three brothers-in-law, Abe Harder, Frank Harder, and Dick Enns.<br><br>Katharina will be deeply missed by her children Katherine Elizabeth(Lisa) Martens; David John Martens (Bonita); Barbara Anne Rhode(Don); as well as ten grandchildren, Alixandra, Logan, Makayla, Andrew, Kyle, Turel, Seaton, Nickolas, Dominik, and Cody; and four great-grandchildren, Camdyn, Dallas, Asher, and Kinsley.<br><br>She will also be missed by her sisters, Helen Harder, Susan Kehler(Henry), Nettie Enns, Anne Toews(Heinz); sister-in-law Anne Friesen; and many nieces and nephews.<br><br>Katharina was born at Bethesda Hospital in Steinbach on August 22, 1934. She grew up on the family farm near Isle des Chenes, MB.<br><br>She was baptized upon confession of her faith in her teen years at the Silberfeld Church.<br><br>In her late twenties she met a dashing young man and love of her life Abe Martens. They were married in May 23, 1964. From 1964-1966 they lived in Dugald and Russell, MB where Abe worked on dairy farms. Their next move was to a small house near her family farm in the summer of 1966. Then in 1970 they moved to Steinbach. On July 1, 1975 they moved to Mitchell where she lived until her passing.<br><br>Katharina loved cooking, baking, gardening, and babysitting for family, friends, and neighbours. She enjoyed teaching Sunday school, Children’s Hour on Wednesdays, and DVBS in summer at her local church in Mitchell. Since a young girl she always loved embroidering and crocheting. Over the years many family and friends became recipients of her beautiful handiwork. Her greatest joy was taking care of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.<br><br>In celebration of her life, a private family graveside service will be held at the Mitchell CMC Church cemetery.<br><br>Katharine’s children wish to thank the homecare staff and community nurses who came weekly for the last three months to care for their mom. Thank you also to the paramedics, RCMP, and Bethesda Hospital ER staff for their compassion, care and kindness during their mom’s final moments.
