Onofre M Stevens Obituary

With much love and with deep sorrow we mourn the passing of Onofre M. Stevens. He was 95 and died 7/29/22 at home in Alameda, NM. He is greatly missed.

He was born to Manual and Lugardita Stevens of Alameda, the youngest of seven children. He attended Albuquerque High School and later graduated. He signed up for the Navy at the age of sixteen, but had to wait until seventeen to be enlisted with his parent’s permission. He drove an amphibious landing craft in the Pacific Theater during WWII. Upon discharge from the Navy, he proposed to and married Maria Aselda Perea of Barelas, January 1946. He built a small house in Alameda with the help of several of his brothers-in-law. He worked for the Santa Fe Railroad at the shops, later for Sandia Mercantile in Albuquerque as a truck driver and a warehouse foreman. He was a lifelong member of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church, and a member of the Post 69. He volunteered as an election official and church usher.

Onofre was a kind, soft-spoken, loving man who went out of his way to give what he had and make things better for others. Onofre enjoyed working on his yard, visiting with neighbors, friends and family, talking about his time in WWII, family stories, politics and current events. He loved peppermint candy, giving driving directions, practical jokes and cream with a little coffee with his friends that he routinely met with at McDonald’s before he was unable to drive.

He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings, his wife Maria, sons Richard and Randy and daughter Susan C. Hanrahan. He is survived by his son Mark, daughters-in-law Carolyn and Hope, grandchildren Benjamin, Elizabeth, Theresa, Robert, Elizabeth T., Kristen, Joseph C. (Nicole), Sarah (Kameron), Joseph R. (Brianna), Aaron (Jazz) and Isaac, fifteen great-grandchildren, brother and sister-in-law Maynard and Virgiline Perea, many nieces and nephews, including Dolores (Eloiso), Beatrice, Patsy and Josie (Dennis) who made special effort to keep in touch with calls, cards, prayers  coming to visit, his cousin, Virginia Mason, who kept in touch with calls and cards, and many great and great-great cousins.

Special thanks and appreciation to Onofre’s great friend, Orlando Sanchez who consistently visited with him and brought him many cups of cream with a little coffee when Onofre was no longer able to go out, Petra Melendez for her loving care for Onofre and family in Onofre’s final months, Presbyterian Complete Care staff, Cindy Moore, CNP with her cheerful home visits, Presbyterian Hospice RN, Laurie Norine, for her sound guidance, and expertise, and Presbyterian Hospice for generous, caring support during Onofre’s last three weeks.
