Carol Girard Mundt Obituary

Carol Girard Mundt passed peacefully in her sleep on July 31, 2022. Carol is survived by her three children: John, Michelle (Tim Ryan), and Angela (Renu Rose), and six grandchildren: Mira and Robert Mundt, Caitlin and Duncan Ryan, and Lucia and Sage Rose, as well as her brother Pete Girard (Jan). She is preceded in death by her husband Robert J. Mundt, parents Evelyn and Edward Girard and her sister Judy (Bill Kraft). Born in Minneapolis, Carol attended Southwest High School and the University of Minnesota, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in education. After graduating from the U in 1962, Carol drove across the country to Monterey, California with her high school friend Pat. The two took teaching jobs and moved into an apartment in Pacific Grove. They became fast friends with their neighbors, four young lieutenants from the nearby army language school. Lifelong friendships ensued as well as two marriages: Pat to Chris Horst and Carol to the love of her life, Bob. Bob and Carol traveled extensively during the early years of their marriage before settling in Charlotte, North Carolina. Carol earned a master’s degree in education from Winthrop College and began teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) at the college level. She spent many years teaching in the English Language Training Institute at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She was dedicated to her international students, often hosting them in her home where she loved introducing them to American culture as much as she loved learning about theirs in return. Carol was a dog lover all of her life from her childhood dog Mike to her last dog Buddy (a stray black lab who followed her home and became her devoted companion for many years). Bob and Carol’s adventures took them through Europe, west Africa and the Middle East. They lived in Paris, Abidjan, the Ivory Coast and Moscow. After Bob’s passing Carol continued to travel with friends visiting Italy, Canada and Turkey. Music and singing were always an important part of Carol’s life. In Charlotte, she and Bob sang in a production of “The Singing Christmas Tree” for several years. After moving to Washington, DC she sang with the Encore Senior Chorale. She once combined her love of music and travel, taking a trip to Europe with the Chorale and performing in various cities. When she moved to Vinson Hall she loved singing with Vinson Voices. Carol’s family is planning to host a celebration of her life in Minneapolis with dates and details still to be determined. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, National Capital Area Chapter, 8180 Greensboro Dr., Suite 400, McLean, VA 22102 Online donations can be made by using the link posted on her obit page or see below
