James Walter Payne, 98 of Vinton, VA went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 2, 2022. He was the son of the late Alfred and Mamie Payne. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Mary Robertson Payne; brother, George Payne; sisters, Mary (Tootsie) Nelson, Barbara Nelson, Patricia (Patti) Gray, Rebecca Higgs; sons-in law, Taylor Carter and Ronald Webber. He was the oldest living member of Clearbrook Baptist Church.

Left to cherish his memory is his daughters, Gloria Carter, Rita Mason and Kathy Webber (Mark Hilton); son, Richard Payne (Bonnie); grandson, Kevin Carter (Kim); granddaughter, Heather Hartberger (Brian); great granddaughter, Kasi Abell; great grandsons, Tyler Oliver, Kaleb Carter and Kollin Carter.

Funeral service will be 10:00 am Friday, August 5, 2022 at Oakey’s Vinton Chapel with Pastor Bryan Ratliff officiating. Internment will follow in Fairview Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday, August 4, 2022 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm and 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Oakey’s Vinton Chapel.
