Sibyl Virginia Coakley Obituary

Sibyl Ethel Virginia Coakley Miss Sibyl Coakley, age 96 passed away November 11, 2015 at Sunnyside Presbyterian Retirement Community where she had been a resident since 2004. She was born December 16, 1918 at Montezuma, Rockingham County, Virginia, and was a daughter of the late Lonnie W. and Hattie Morris Coakley. The family moved to the Port Republic Community in 1930 and later to the Mt. Olive Community, McGaheysville, Virginia. Sibyl was a graduate of Port Republic High School, Class of 1936. She was also a graduate of the Harrisonburg School of Business. Sibyl was employed for many years by C. G. Price and Sons in Harrisonburg, Virginia and later at Bridgewater College where she worked as office secretary until she retired. Miss Coakley was an active member of Mt. Olive Brethren Church, McGaheysville, Virginia for many years. On November 4, 2004, she was awarded a 72 year membership certificate recognizing her as one of the two oldest living members of the congregation. The other member was her sister, the late Beryl Coakley. Sibyl was preceded in death by her sister, Beryl Coakley and by her brother, Carl W. Coakley, and sister-in-law Mable Baker Coakley. She is survived by first cousins Jean Hogshead, Louise Kyger, and Byron Morris. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, November 15, 2015 at 3:00 PM in the chapel of Johnson Funeral Home, Bridgewater, Virginia. Officiating will be the Rev. Paul OGorek, Chaplin at the Sunnyside Home. Burial will take place at Mt. Horeb United Methodist Cemetery, Hinton, Virginia, following the service. Friends may visit the family at the Funeral Home one hour prior to the funeral service. In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sunnyside Presbyterian Retirement Community, 3935 Sunnyside Drive-Suite A, Harrisonburg, Va. 22801-2336.
