Janet A. Kohn, 91 years, died July 28, 2022, in Brooksville, FL. She was born June 2, 1931, at home in Newaygo, Michigan, daughter of Charles Edgar and Ida Norie Barton Dorcey. Her family, which included her two older sisters, moved to Whittemore shortly after Janet’s birth. Two more sisters and two brothers completed their family. Janet graduated from Burleigh Rural Agricultural High School on May 26, 1949. On May 28, 1949, she married Allen E. Kohn, Sr. They moved to East Lansing where Allen earned a bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University. They moved to Edmore in 1953 where Allen taught agriculture. Their first son, Allen Jr., was born in 1951, Tom in 1954, and Phillip in 1957. Janet began college in 1958 and earned a B.S. degree in 1967 from Central Michigan University and a master’s degree in 1972 from Michigan State University. She worked for Edmore/Montabella schools for a total of 29 years, holding positions as a teacher’s aide, central office secretary, assistant superintendent, and third-grade teacher. Janet attended the Methodist Church before marriage and the Lutheran Church after she and Allen married. She was involved in teaching Sunday School, singing in the choir, teaching Summer Bible School, and serving on the church council. She worked on United Way drives for more than 25 years, was active with Montcalm County Republicans, served as secretary for the Montcalm Public Employees Credit Union for 25 years, and was a member of GFWC Edmore Women’s Club, serving in many offices, including President of General Federation of Women’s Clubs Michigan 2000-2002. When not working or volunteering, Janet enjoyed traveling, golf, scrabble, bridge, and reading. A large part of her life with Allen was spent at the blueberry farm in Edmore which they purchased in 1973. Janet is survived by all three sons: Allen Jr. and his wife Ellen (nee Keegan) of Palm Harbor, FL, Thomas and his wife Christine (nee Washburn) of Greenville, MI, and Phillip and his wife Oksana (nee Polosina) residing at the Blueberry Farm in Edmore. She was blessed with five grandchildren Aaron (Katie) Kohn, David (Kristen) Kohn, Laura (Alex) Montoye, Allen P. Kohn, and Alexander Kohn and seven great- grandchildren, Alyssa, Noah, Emily, Charlotte, Daniel, Benjamin, and Thomas. She is also survived by her sisters Elsie Rytlewski and Ethel Blust and her brother Thomas Dorcey. She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Helen and Clarissa, brother William, and her loving husband, Allen. A memorial service will be held at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Edmore, MI on Sunday, August 21, 2022, at 2:00pm, with Pastor Wayne Hoedt officiating. Friends may visit with the family at 1:00pm, or one hour before the service. Interment will be at Vinewood Cemetery in Edmore. Memorials may be made to Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Edmore, MI or to Bay Cliff Health Camp in Big Bay, MI.
