George Gilbert Smith, 92, of Granite Shoals, Texas passed away July 29, 2022. He was born November 20, 1929 to Frank and Kathryn (Schults) Smith in El Paso, Texas.

George grew up in Clint, Texas and graduated from Ysleta High School. Shortly after high school, George was drafted into the Army and served one tour in Korea. After his honorable discharge he returned to El Paso until the start of the Vietnam war when he selflessly re-enlisted. His second enlistment led him to four tours in Vietnam serving with the Special Forces. After twenty-six years of service, George retired as a Master Sergeant. During retirement, George and Liz bought a motor home and traveled the country for the next fifteen years playing golf at every course they came across. The couple settled in the Texas Hill Country in 2004, first in Kingsland and later in Granite Shoals. George was also a long-time Mason. He was a member of Kingsland Lodge #1424, and he just received his 60-year membership award in May of 2022.

He is survived by his loving wife of sixty-five years, Liz Smith of Granite Shoals, Texas, daughters, Kathi Auten and husband Brutus of Seguin, Texas and Janis Thomas and husband Gary of Burnet, Texas, grandson, Ethan Thomas, and niece, Debby McGowen. He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Frank Smith and Shirley Haygood.

A Celebration of Life will be 5:00 P.M. Sunday, August 7, 2022 at the First Christian Church in Burnet, Texas. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Honor Flight Inc. 1108 Lavaca Street, Suite 110, Box 609, Austin, TX 78701.
