Samuel P. Hicks Ravenswood, West Virginia Obituary

Samuel P. Hicks

Samuel P. Hicks, 81, of Ravenswood, WV passed away February 13, 2022 at home surrounded by his loving family following a brief illness. He was born February 21, 1940 in Huntington, WV, the son of the late Reverend Homer T Hicks and Beatrice Lou Blake. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his daughter, Mary Elizabeth Hicks; sisters, Mitzi Oldaker, Vickie Ramey, and Sandra Mitchell; brothers; Thomas Hicks and Richard Hicks. He graduated from Ripley High School in 1958, where he lettered in basketball. He married his wife June "Sis" Suck in 1962. He served in the United States Air Force as a Teletype Operator. He had many unforgettable stories to tell of his military service in Spain and of his family vacation trips. To anyone that knew Sam, knew of his incredible work ethic. He delivered bread for twenty years throughout areas of West Virginia and Ohio. He opened Quality Care Cleaners in 1986 with locations in Ravenswood and Ripley, WV. For twenty years, he helped his community and customers no matter the time or day. People came to know him through, not only his business, but his infectious laugh and humor. After selling the business and retiring, he realized he couldn't stay idle for long and went back to work as a school bus driver. There was never a cleaner bus than the one he drove, much to the envy of his fellow bus drivers. In addition to his dedication to his career, he also had another passion, golf. It started when he was a caddy as a young boy at Guyan Country Club. He continued playing while in the service, in Madrid, Spain. In 2002, he started going to an annual golf tournament, The Penn Masters, with his brother, Carder. Family Members started to join the tournament over the years including his brother-in-law Doug Barbe, nephews Matt and Chris Barbe and grandson-in-law, Spencer Didion, who he got the joy of watching win in 2017. He was so proud, you would have thought he was the one who won. He has the only hole-in-one in Penn Masters' history and two others at Green Hills Country Club. Sam was loved deeply and will be missed terribly. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, June (Suck) Hicks; daughters, Kimberlee Hicks Sauls (Eric); Julie Hicks Plummer (Shannon Murray); Foreign exchange son, Lars Belling (Connie); grandchildren; Jordan Vincent Didion (Spencer), Ashley Sauls (Timothy Medas), Jenna Plummer, and Jaela Plummer; great-grandchildren, Zoe and Riley Didion. He is also survived by brothers, Ronald Hicks (Shirley), Carder Hicks (Dorinne); sisters, Sidnee Jones (Dwight), Donna Yencha (Jody); sisters-in-law, Carol Jane Duranti (Bucky), Janet Barbe (Doug) and many nieces and nephews. A celebration of his life will be held Saturday February 19, 2022 at Roush Funeral Home with visitation from 11am-1pm with service to follow with Pastor Toby Wagner officiating. Condolences may be expressed to the family at roush94@yahoo.com or on our Facebook page.
