He was born on January 28, 1926, in Ravenswood, son of the late H. Gordon and Maudie Ethel Taylor Shockey. Bob attended Ravenswood High School with the class of 1945, before leaving to enlist in the United States Navy. He served with distinction on board the U.S.S. Heywood L. Edwards DD 663 Fighting 56th, earning a Silver Star as well as four Bronze Stars. Bob received recognition for having served in battles at Saipan-Tinian, Peleliu, Leyte, Surigao Strait, Luzon, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. Upon returning home from military service in 1946, Bob married his childhood sweetheart, Martha Ann Smith, in her parent's family home on Sand Street. Later, Bob and Martha moved to the Sand Street home, raising their family of four sons and three daughters. Bob was retired from Kaiser Aluminum Plate Department as a production supervisor. Bob was a member of the Kaiser and Douglas Church of Christ in Ravenswood; VFW Post 6669 Sandyville; American Legion Post 118, Ravenswood; Kaiser Aluminum Salaried Retirees Association; Commissioned Kentucky Colonel; and past member of Ravenswood Lions Club. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Ann; brothers, Lester, Cleon, William, Glen, and Ivan; and son, Denzil Wayne Shockey. Bob is survived by his children, Roy (Carol) Shockey, Ray (Terry) Shockey, Roberta (Jim) Somerville, George Shockey, Ethel Lemley, Judith Shockey, and daughter-in-law, Robin Shockey, all of Jackson County. Grandpa Shockey also leaves eighteen grandchildren, thirty-three great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be held on Monday, June 12, 2017, at 1:00 pm at Roush Funeral Home in Ravenswood, WV, with Pastor Roger Cummings officiating. Burial will follow in Ravenswood Cemetery with graveside military rites provided by the Jackson County Honor Guard. Friends may visit the family at the funeral home on Sunday, June 11, 2017, from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm, and one hour prior to the service on Monday.
