John W. VanMeter, 77, of Syracuse, Ohio, passed away on May 8, 2017, in Parkersburg, WV.
John was born on June 28, 1939, in Portland, Ohio, son of the late Robert and Ida Margaret Wells VanMeter.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers-in-law, Wayne Rowe, Dennie Manuel, Richard Gilbride, and James Persinger; and sister-in-law, Ada Rowe.
He was an associate member of East Letart United Methodist Church; member of Racine Lodge #164 in Pomeroy; and a member of NRA. Flying was a big part of his life. He was qualified in many different planes. He had 30 years of service with the Marmac Corp as a pilot. He was a devoted family man who was especially proud of his grandchildren. He was a veteran who served in the U.S. Air Force.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Betty Rowe VanMeter; daughter, Alicia Shuler; son, Jon (Renea) VanMeter; 4 grandchildren, Rachel, Ashton, Skylar and Garrett; aunt, Ila Roush and her children, Denny, Danny, Darrel Roush and Diana Duhl; brothers-in-law, Raymond (Kay) and Paul (Rose) Rowe; sisters-in-law, Gertrude Manual, Eunice Wilson, Yvonna Persinger, and Paula Gilbride; and several loving nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held on Friday, May 12, 2017, at 1:30 pm at Roush Funeral Home in Ravenswood, WV, with Reverend William Marshall officiating. Burial will follow in Letart Falls Cemetery, Racine, Ohio.
Friends may visit the family at the funeral home on Thursday, May 11, 2017, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.
