Sharon O'Neal Obituary

Sharon Kay (Cher) O’Neal, 71, of Marshalltown, passed away on August 1, 2022, in the peace and comfort of her home under the care of the wonderful, caring people at Iowa River Hospice. Per the wishes of Cher and her family, cremation rites have been accorded. A private family interment and celebration of life will take place at a later date at Lake Ponderosa in Montezuma. Cher O’Neal was born on April 11, 1951, to Les Johnson and Jean Nall in Chariton, Iowa. She attended school at Marshalltown High School. Cher was united in marriage to Rod O’Neal on November 9, 1968 at The Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Rod and Cher had a loyal marriage of nearly 54 years, full of laughter, mutual respect, and care for each other. To this union were born two children – Shannon Lynn and Shay Jeffrey. Cher was a firm but jovial mother who loved to make her children laugh. She also loved to cook amazing meals and desserts for her children and others. Cher was very creative and loved to decorate and make beautiful floral arrangements. She worked part-time at Floweramma for many years. She also had a tender heart and spoiled her pets and fed all the wildlife that visited her yard. When her grandchildren came about, that love and spoiling extended to them as well. Cher will be remembered by friends and family for having the gift of gab and she loved talking on the phone. She was an outstanding cook and liked to entertain during the holidays and deliver homemade goods to neighbors and friends. In addition, she enjoyed flower gardening, reading magazines, trying new kitchen gadgets, decorating for the holidays and car shows with Rod. However, her absolute favorite thing to do was surprising her loved ones with thoughtful and sometimes humorous gifts. Left to cherish her memory are her loving husband, Rod; daughter Shannon O’Neal and her children Zach and Ryan of Alpharetta GA; son Shay (Tonya) O’Neal and their children Ayden and Alyssa of Davenport; brothers Tully and Darren of Melbourne; brother Scott of Seattle, mother Jean Nall of Melbourne; brother and sister-in-law Larry (Judy) O’Neal of Marshalltown; and many cherished nieces, nephews, and cousins. Meeting her in Heaven are her beloved brother Jeffrey, father Les Johnson, grandmother Maggie Swanson, father-in-law and mother-in-law Don and Evelyn O’Neal, and cherished pets Odie, Drew, and Lexie. The family wishes to thank the staff at Iowa River Hospice for the care given to Cher and her family.
