Helen Peppers Hay of Lawrenceville, Ga passed away on Monday, August 1 st , one week short of her 91 st birthday which will occur on August 8 th . She was born in Jefferson, Georgia to Jim Lee Peppers and Texie Smallwood Peppers and moved with family to Social Circle, Georgia and eventually to Clarkston, Georgia where she grew up attending elementary school and then high school where she graduated in 1950. After graduating from high school, she went to work at Gates Rubber Company where she worked for several years while enjoying a busy social life. Much of these times involved a special young man who had gone off to war in Korea with whom she kept up a regular correspondence. That young man returned and soon there was talk of marriage. The time came and a wedding took place at the Indian Creek Baptist Church on May 19, 1956. Three years went by until on April 13, 1959, she gave birth to Pepper Lane Hay. In the meantime, they had joined Valley Brook Baptist Church where she was baptized and became an active participant in the music program. After several years the family moved to Gwinnett County where they had purchased 55 acres of land at what is presently the intersection of Sugarloaf Parkway and Five Forks Road. Again, she was active in the music program at First Baptist Church of Lawrenceville. After two years, the family relocated again, this time to a home on Hwy 29 which was home to the family for 20 plus years. On September 30, 1964, the second child, Laura Amanda Hay was born. Helen was employed as a kindergarten teacher at Lilburn First Baptist Church. She loved to sing and joined the adult choir. She was a soloist and also sang in a gospel quartet. After several years of teaching kindergarten, she accepted a position as a Special Education Paraprofessional at Bethesda Elementary School, from which she retired. After retiring, Helen had the opportunity to enjoy her passion to travel. Her many trips included multiple countries in Europe, Egypt -The Holy Land and all over the USA. She also became very interested in and involved in genealogy. She thoroughly enjoyed going to various archives and historical society locations to pursue her new hobby. She spent many happy hours on this endeavor and became a member of Atlanta Chapter 18 of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Through other thorough research she qualified for membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution and became a member of the Lawrenceville Philadelphia Winn Chapter, which she loved. Her prized possessions included membership certificates for various successful records developed concerning her forebears. Helen loved her Sunday School class, all its members and the ladies who taught the group. Due to the problems associated with the pandemic she, like others, was limited in participating in many activities. With declining health she was able to participate in fewer activities but she continued to remember fondly activities of the Senior Choir which she loved and supported in every way possible. When she was diagnosed as suffering from both heart and kidney failure life became more difficult until she lost the battle and was called home to Heaven on August 1, 2022. Helen is survived by her husband of 66 years, James Hay, son Pepper Lane Hay and wife Mary, daughter Laura Hay Johnson and husband David, grandchildren Timmy Lemoine and family, Nathaniel Lemoine and family, five great grandchildren, many loving nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and other extended family members.
