Jo-Ann "Cathy" Masters Obituary

Cathy Masters (Moodie), wife of Bruce, mother of Shanlee, Brenden and Kiera died peacefully surrounded by her family on Saturday, July 30. A daughter of Alex and Molly Moodie, Cathy was born on November 1, 1956 in Kamsack, Saskatchewan, one of Alex and Molly’s eight children.

As a young woman, Cathy loved sports. She was an avid curler and enjoyed playing both women’s fastball and mixed slow-pitch baseball. In fact, she met her husband Bruce when they played in a mixed slow-pitch league in Winnipeg. They married in May of 1982.

In 1990, Cathy and Bruce moved their family from to Colorado, and her primary focus became being the best wife and mother she could. She sewed the best Halloween costumes for her elementary-aged children (it’s rumored that a Raggedy Ann costume and a bunny suit, complete with ears and tail were recently found buried in one of her closets). When her children were young, Cathy could often be found sitting on the front porch, watching them play in the cul-de-sac, with a cup of coffee or a glass of wine in her hand.

After she moved to Colorado, Cathy quickly became involved in (and eventually organized) her neighborhood’s 4th of July party.  Yes, she was a Canadian through and through, but she also embraced  any opportunity to bring people together and celebrate – even the 4th of July.

Cathy was an avid reader, gardener, cook and seamstress. When Shanlee married her husband Chad, Cathy sewed the couple a quilt that became a guest book for each attendee to sign. She was also an avid fan of any and all teams where Brenden competed – especially his hockey teams at Arapahoe Hockey Association. For most of Brenden’s hockey career, Bruce was his coach and Cathy served as the team manager, cheering on her son and keeping the team (and their families) organized in the demanding chaos of youth sports.

Cathy loved to travel and loved to play the slots. For many years, she took an annual trip to Las Vegas with her WOW Group (Wenches Only Weekend). She and Bruce enjoyed many vacations with their friends Joni and Clyde, traveling to casinos for G&G weekends (Golf & Gambling), and trips to Vegas with their friends Pam and Doug. The two couples would meet up to watch international curling events (Cathy would visit the slots while the others went to watch the curling). Despite her love for the excitement of travel and casinos, her favorite places to visit were in Winnipeg at the Legion, her aunt Iris’ garden and Joni’s garden.

Cathy is survived by her husband Bruce, her daughter Shanlee Kasson (Chad) of Highlands Ranch, CO, son Brenden (Taylor Kelly) of Ft. Collins, CO, and daughter Kiera Frydrychowski (Nick) also of Highlands Ranch, CO, and grandsons Dominic and Diesel Frydrychowski; sister-in-law Sandy Moodie; sister Karen Burden (Calvin); brother Dennis Moodie (Marcella); brother Brian Moodie (Cindy); brother Bruce Moodie (Sheila); sister-in-law Susan Moodie; mother-in-law Joan Masters; sister-in-law Kim Girden (Rick); sister-in-law Sandy Masters (Pernall Johnson); brother-in-law Curt Masters (Christine); sister-in-law Debbie Thibault; and countless nephews and nieces. She is also survived by (and will be dearly missed by) The Muskrat Group (Sharon, Joyce, Val and Debbie); Aunties Iris, Connie, Elaine, Cathy and Grace; uncles Jack and Archie; and friends Joni and Clyde Williams, Pam Dixon and Doug Patenaude. She is pre-deceased by her parents, Alex and Molly Moodie, brothers Allen, Bob and Ken Moodie, nephew David Moodie, niece Teri Moodie, father-in-law Gordon Masters and brother-in-law Roger Thibault.

A memorial service is planned for September 23, 2022 in Colorado. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for donations to be made to the ALS Association -  www.als.org or to Homeward Alliance - homewardalliance.org
