William Edward Brown Obituary

William Brown died peacefully on May 12, 2013 at the Hearthstone in White Plains surrounded by his family after an extended illness. William was born in 1929 to the late Roger and Lillian Brown. He attended Mount Vernon public schools and graduated from A.B. Davis HS in June 1947. After high school, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and served as a cryptographic operator with the rank of Staff Sergeant in the 4210th operations squadron and was honorably discharged in February, 1952. He married Phyllis McCullough of Mount Vernon on Aug. 14, 1954. Soon thereafter he graduated, cum laude, from Iona College in 1956 with a degree in accounting. For 10 years after college he worked as an accountant for NY Telephone Co. and was later the VP of Finance and the Treasurer of Bekaert U.S. He later became the Treasurer of Mark Cross, Inc. and ended his successful career in corporate finance as an executive with Shelby Shoes. In the late sixties and early seventies, William and family hosted several foreign exchange students during the summer and in 1971 they welcomed a foreign exchange student from Finland, Panu Harmo, who lived with them for a year. He and Phyllis travelled extensively over the years and William particularly enjoyed visiting Finland and Panu. Bill was a lover of sports and played baseball varsity in HS basketball and tennis. He later coached basketball and baseball for the Dad's Club in Greenburgh. He was active in civic and civil rights organizations in Mount Vernon and Greenburgh and served on the Greenburgh Recreation Commission and the Board of the Greenburgh Housing Authority. After his retirement, he was deeply committed to WISE, a program devoted to preparing high school students for career and vocational development. Bill is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, four sons and their wives, Steven Karen and Richard Donna of White Plains and David Michele and Gary Tracey of Columbia MD , nine grandchildren Anya, Marcus, Nicole, Christopher, Jason, Sasha, Taylor, Alex and Ryan, a sister-in-law Muriel Brown; three nieces Larene Brown LaSonde, Tamara Ewell Jackson, DDS and Debra Guinn Francis, a nephew Larry Brown, many grand and great-grand nieces and nephews and countless cousins. He was pre-deceased by his sisters Marion Guinn, Wilhemina Ewell, and brothers Roger Brown and Milford "Sonny" Brown. Visiting Thursday 2-4 and 7-9pm prayer service at 8:00pm, followed by remembrances Mass of the Resurrection Friday 9:30am at Church of the Sacred Heart, Dobbs Ferry. Entombment immediately following at Rose Hill Memorial Park, Putnam Valley, NY.
