Curt Fried Dobbs Ferry, New York Obituary

Curt Fried

Curt Fried, 89, of Boca Raton, Florida and Ardsley, New York passed away Friday, April 12 after a brief illness. Curt is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Sally Gettleman Fried, his five children: Melanie, Arthur, Robert, Judy, and Daniel, and their spouses: Barry, Caren, Nancy, Jon and DeLaun. His legacy includes 14 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. Curt Fried escaped Nazi persecution in September, 1939 when, at the age of 14, he and his 15 year old brother Irwin, boarded a train in Vienna headed for Paris. They arrived the very day France declared war on Germany and were forced to re-route to Rotterdam. They eventually made their way to Newark, NJ where they found safety with relatives. Curt attended Weequahic High School and then entered the US Army and served as a radio specialist working on the Burma Road in India and China. After military service, Fried returned to the Bronx where he co-founded H&H Photographers, a photography studio that has proudly served the New York metropolitan area for over 65 years. Soon after his return to NY, Curt met Sally, and started their beautiful family, first in the Bronx and eventually in Ardsley, NY. The Fried's have lived in Ardsley for over 55 years and all five children graduated from Ardsley High School. All five attended America's finest universities and graduate schools. Melanie is a world renowned Speech Pathologist, Arthur a successful health care entrepreneur, Robert an Academy Award winning producer and media entrepreneur, Judy a respected Urologist, and Daniel a successful film producer who has now taken over the management of H & H Photographers. Curt Fried was beloved by all that knew him for his brilliant mathematical mind, his infectious sense of humor, his perseverance and his reliability. He loved his family. He loved his Jewishness. He loved tennis, golf and kibbitzing in the bagel room at the Polo Club in Boca. And he loved America for which he was unendingly grateful. From very challenging beginnings, Curt Fried built a legacy of caring, character and consistency that is being perpetuated by his five children, 14 grandchildren and 1 so far great-grandchild. He is already missed; his memory serves as our inspiration. The funeral will take place at Greenburgh Hebrew Center, 515 Broadway. Dobbs Ferry NY on Monday, April 15 at noon, with burial to follow at Sharon Gardens Cemetery in Valhalla.
